New Puffers!

Post by stagger »

Hi All, I just picked up (2) Fig 8 puffers from my local aquarium store.
They will be kept in a 12 gallon planted tank.
Im new too puffers, so I wanted to make sure I'm providing proper care for them.

Ive heard the fig 8 puffers are brackish water fish, but my local fish store keeps them in fresh water.
Should I slowly adapt them to brackish water?

Also for food, I do have some snails in the planted tank now, but for there main diet I was told
to feed them bloodworms. Is it ok for them to eat bloodworms for there staple diet, and as long as they get some snails weekly,
this will keep there teeth down?

and last question, is 2 fig 8's ok for a 12 by themselves?

You should acclimate them slowly to brackish. You will need a 30+ gallon for 2 figure eights. I would feed them gut loaded ghost shrimp, blood worms, snails to keep there teeth worn down and other carnivourous foods.

Good luck with your new puffers!

You should cive them a varied diet too. Mine liked mysis shrimp and mussle/clam on the halfshell.

Thanks Pufferfreak. Where do you purchase your Mussle/Clam on the half shells, Aquarium store or Supermarket?

supermarkets!!!!
Pufferfreak is right 12 gal is too small..need 30 gal tank and they will be good in low brackish. They love to explore like all puffers do. Lots of plants is recommanded and i think many plants can survive in low end brackish.
