Dwarf Puffer from Brackish to Freshwater

HI there,

I'm new to the forum and have just spotted dwarf puffers at a local pet store and definately want to pick some up. All of my tanks are currently freshwater, and would like to stick with that. The puffers at the store are in a brackish water tank. I know it cant be healthy to throw a fish from brackish to freshwater, but i know the puffers do fine in both, but i was just curious what the outcome would be. Or if i weened them off of it, maybe keeping them seperated in my smaller tanks adding freshwater to them slowly, then putting them into a full freshwater tank after 2-3 weeks?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Make sure they are actually dwarf puffers. If so, they do not belong in brackish water, and will be grateful to be slowly acclimated to fresh water over about an hour, either by drip acclimation or cupping water in and out of their bags.

yes, they are definately dwarfs, and i was surprised to see them in the brackish tank, there was probably 3-4 of them in the tank, i have a small 7 gallon, well planted corner tank on my desk that i would love to put 2 of them in and it has been cycling and wating for its occupants for about 3-4 weeks now, I will go up to the store tomorrow and start acclamating the little guys (or girls) to their new freshwater palace, thanks for the input... i was really worried about the move.

You might want to ask the shop what they actually consider BW. Could be, they just threw in a tbsp of salt in there.

7 G might be a bit thight for 2 DP... depends on how aggressive they are... try not to get 2 males, hoping they are big enough to be able to tell the difference! Make sure there's a piece of wood or high thick plants in the middle to cut the sight line and give them 2 territories.

i cant really tell which 2 i got, they are very small and not to aggressive yet, im hoping that since they have been together since birth (from what the store told me) they will be fine when they get older, but i do have plenty of foliage in the tank to break line of sight of the little guys.


PS I also picked up a 20 gallon tank and got myself a F8 .. walmart had them for $4.83 each so i couldnt refuse! Its my first brackish setup, so im really looking forward to her as well. Puffers are so freakin cute!
