Toothless Dog Face Puffer

Post by edmlfc1 »

I went to the lfs today and they have a Dog face puffer. He/She is so cute, it don't have any teeth. They are having to cut up food into small pieces for the puffer to eat. The puffer arrived at their store in this condition. When it first arrived it was very skinny, they have since fattened it up. I'm just curious if anyone has ever seen a toothless puffer? Will it's teeth grow back? They wanted me to purchase it and take it home but I just don't have the room. :( I would love to have it. I would probally call it a he and name him Gramps. :D He reminds me of someone when they take their false teeth out and their lips tend to go inward. I wish I had a place for the little guy. Btw: I asked if they had any idea what happened, they have no clue. They think it may have something to do with the way he was caught.

Any updates on this fish? Is it still doing alright? Has it been adopted yet?

I believe their teeth grow back. My LFS has had this dogface puffer for a long time and at first it was missing the whole leftside of its teeth. But since it's grown back completely.

I haven't been back to the store so I don't know if it's been adopted or not. They seem to take really good care of the puffers they get in. I purchased Elvis from them. They were actually babysitting, then his daddy decided to go with a reef aquariaum, so I took him home. :D Of course I visited with Elvis for over a month, bringing him clams and other goodies. I got attached before I even knew he would be for sale. I went in one day to bring Elvis some treats and they gave me the news. I went back the next day and picked him up. When I go in there they always ask how he's doing. He has doubled in size in the last six months. They can't believe it. They tried and tried to get me to take the dog face. They even told me they would give me a discount. I just couldn't do it no matter how much I wanted too. :( I was thinking about going by there today but with this storm, they may be closed. I'm curious to see how the little dog face is doing or if he's still there.

Just got back from the lfs and they still have the dog face puffer. He is so friendly, he comes right up to the glass. He is such a cutie. They said he's doing really good but they have to cut up his food in very small pieces for him to eat. He's eating good even though he has no teeth. I'll be going back in a few days, I'll try to remember to bring my camera and get a picture of him. If I can remember. :D

After visiting the store earlier today and seeing a wrasse I had to go back and get it. While I was there I brought my camera and took pictures of the dog face. He is about 3". His tummy was full so he would not come out to the front of the glass like he did earlier but I managed to get a few pictures anyway. They just fed him a whole shrimp (cut up) and he was totally unintrested in me. I tried to get a front view picture but he wouldn't turn around. Hope you can see his little mouth in these. Enjoy!

Green Spotted Puffers are not a shoaling fish and do not need the company of other fish to keep them happy.

edm...

you DID have selena AND elvis, and would have seen them both through to adulthood somehow...

so i'm sure you could find room for a dogface now that selena is no more...

couldn't you... :)

Don't even think I have not thought about it. :D I'm still thinking about it. Only problem is he has no teeth. That's what worry's me. I'm afriad with the other puffers he would not have any defense. :(

They called the wrasse a rainbow wrasse. Liveaquaria.com calls it Pinkface Wrasse (Thalassoma quinquevittatum). The only reason I got it is because with 3 messy eaters the food is going between the rocks and getting stuck. I wanted something to clean it up. So he will be getting all the left overs. This will help me from having to tear down the rocks after each feeding to get all the extra food out. I hope anyway. :? He sure is beatuiful and I'm going to call him Hoover. :D I would get snails, crabs or shrimp but don't want to have to buy them every week. That would become expensive puffer food. I did some research on the wrasse and he's known to be aggressive so he should be able to stand his ground. The guy at the lfs said he may steal the food from the puffers, I started laughing. That just struck me as funny for some reason. I guess knowing how agressive they are with their food it just don't seem possible. :D If it don't work out I can always return him. :(

Those are really pretty wrasses, one of my favorites for sure! You'd be surprised how greedy wrasse's are when it comes to food.

If this is true I should never have to tear down the rocks again. :D I'm really hoping he will do good with the puffers. I was not planning on adding anymore fish until I saw all that food caught in the rocks. I think he's about 3.5" right now maybe a little longer. We'll see what happens when he moves in. :D
