Earthquakes and GSP's
Well, we had a 5.8 here in Los Angeles about 20 minutes ago.....water all sloshing around in my tank. To report....GSP's don't like earthquakes. Poor ol Elevator turned all dark and was hiding in a cave. After about 5 minutes, he came out and started doing the swimming around the thermometer thing that he normally does....DP's didn't seem to care one bit.....
So....how does anyone else deal with earthquakes and the potential of falling aquariums?

Re: Earthquakes and GSP's
Hurricanes are bad enough.......it was not huge....USGS called it "moderate", but the sloshing in the tank has got me worried about the big one....CA is due for a big one soon, and it might be nice to take measures to stop my tanks toppling over.

Re: Earthquakes and GSP's
I checked on all my tanks and my Golden was sitting on his side on the bottom. I was really worried, and was considering doing a WC, but then I didn't want to stress him more. None of my tanks fell over greatefully (I held my 10G just in case). My fahaka wasn't too happy either. All my fish are fine now (thankfully!).

Good on you...I made a mad dash to the biorb in my bedroom....after it was done, i ran downstairs to check on the other tanks...everyone is ok now at least...it shook up the substrate at the bottom to make the water a little icky at the bottom for a minute...but everything has settled down.

Re: Earthquakes and GSP's
I'm worried about my puffers! The quake felt BIG on the 6th floor where I work in Westwood. The building was just swaying back and forth for around 15 seconds. I'm still at work and can't get home just yet and I hope my tanks are alright. In hindsight I should have left a bigger gap between my 2 tanks.....I hope they didn't smash into each other and break.....

Re: Earthquakes and GSP's
I reckon they will be fine so long as there was an inch between them. It didnt sway all that much on the lower grounds...and we only had about 5 - 7 seconds of motion...I guess your buildings earthquake rollers keep the building moving a little longer. They should be alive and kicking.

Re: Earthquakes and GSP's
Thanks Lulu. I am looking for preventative measures. How to anchor a tank or not have it fall down when the shakes get bad.
Re: Earthquakes and GSP's
I use rubbermaids all the time for my goldfish some are even housed in them for months at a time they are a good cheap tank ,just watch for other critters that you may have and be sure to reinforce the sides with bungi cords or rope as the weight of the water can make the sides bow
the only thing that ould worry me about trying to ancor a tank would be uneven pressure when the water sloshes around ..if it would cause a crack or a blown seal

Re: Earthquakes and GSP's
I'm actually in Colorado ATM, and I remember talking to my mom when she first heard it from one of dad's friends who was actually right by chino hills. Anyway, glad I live in a non-earthquake prone area. Back to Idaho for me tomorrow!

Both my GSP and Fugu are fine! By the time I got home they behaved normal as if nothing had happened. Thanks for your concern!
