two possiblities for getting a brackish tank to cycle.
hi everyone, ok so after the disaster with eight ball (RIP) i've let my tank sit for a while and just letting ti try ti cycle with just some snails in it. i checked the water today and i've noticed ammonia is low (.25) and nitrites/trates are 0. i wanted to try and get some shrimp from the local store but i haven't gotten out to it yet to try and let that decay in the tank. i was wondering if there is any other sort of thing i can let decay in the tank instead that i can possibly have lying around my house already. maybe some sort of plant i could cut from outside or something similar. i was also thinking maybe i would add the mollie fry i have from my other tank and cycle the tank with them. think that could work? also i noticed that my water got very hard over the past few days. could it be becuase i added a airstone? my other tank has soft water and no air stone and the water from my tap is always soft. any other explanations? any advice on how to help my tank cycle would be great. thanks everyone.

I use algae wafer.
