What causes a rusty orange/brown algae on the sand and glass of a marine tank? and how can i get rid of it?

Its ugly, but a good sign that your tank is maturing. Wiping them off the glass is a good option, also, reducing the nitrate levels in your tank (via water change/s) will help to kill it off. IME Trochus sp. snails also love the stuff and will happily eat it too, so if you haven't got any, you may want to consider some.
