The rise continues...

Post by Jay.B. »

As some may already know, after reading about others keeping their GSPs in marine conditions at sizes as small as 2" I had decided to raise the SG on Bonzos tank.
Today saw Bonzos aquarium reach a theoretical SG of 1.014
Having initially done various calculations and measurements while I had my other halfs refractometer, I have been working on the assumption that every 1.25g of salt per Litre of water will give an additional SG of 0.001, so every week for the last 2 months I have been increasing by an alleged 0.001 per week (I am hoping to once again borrow the refractometer to see just how accurate my calculations are).
So far everything seems stable, although I did have to remove the java moss and java ferns at about 1.012 as they were starting to wilt and turn brown, but fish and water wise, everything is still spot on.
The Bumble Bee Gobies also seem to be holding in there, not like they have much of a choice as I'm really struggling to find a new home for them, but they don't seem to be suffering any ill effects of the rising salt levels.

Anyway, just wanted to keep you up to date with how things are going... :)

and if I believe that I'd be as dumb as he is LOL

I actually heard him jump for the first time the other night, not sure whether it's because of the salt or because I just haven't heard it before, I was awake later than usual, so it may be that :)

Since hitting 1.014 on the SG in Bonzos tank, I have noticed his behavior to be a little bit more erratic than usual... I think I'm going to stick at this density for a few weeks and see if he settles down a bit, there have been no other signs of problems, he is still as brightly coloured and white bellied as ever, I did notice a strange action, but after seeing what happened after, I put it down to him curling out a cleveland steamer LOL it was like a very mini puff and a shake of the belly, as if he was moving the crap towards his a-hole haha very strange to see... what a nice thought to leave you with hahaha

in addition, I just did a set of tests, ammo 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 5-10 so I know there's no problems there :)

quick update...

reached 0.019 density this evening and he seems as happy as ever, buzzing about, checking the rocks for food (which reminds me, it's feeding time)

going to give it another week before I start getting a few pieces of L-R and build that bit up slowly, week by week due to cost etc. etc.

so far so good... :)

Glad to hear all is going well. Mine are sitting firm at 1.012 and have for a little while now. Mine had to erratic thing happen too, but it was when they hit a theoretical of 1.012

Like you, I cant wait to get them into live rock and sand, instead of the gravel they currently live with. :)

1.021 last night after the water change... almost there... got a bid on a skimmer on ebay... going to check out some live rock this weekend... and got my canister ready for plumbing in (for putting activated carbon, and phos removal packs in etc.) putting together a plan of action for a partial strip down... which will unfortunately mean putting Bonzo in my little 35 litre Q Tank for a couple of days... no food for him while he's in there...

I suppose this is now in the wrong section of the forum...

a day late, but never mind :)

made the final increase in SG tonight, now running at 1.023

got the skimmer sat on one side waiting, AquaC Remora with MaxiJet 1200 Power Head

got the canister sat on one side waiting, Fluval 205

got 7G Q tank up and running... ready for new arrival hopefully...

need to find the time to strip down, plumb and wire everything in, then re-fill...

great LR in LFS awaiting my purchase now, that's going to be a gradual thing... a couple of pieces per week for a few weeks

any last minute pieces of advice you think may be useful are always appreciated :)
