How to change GSP tank to Marine??

Post by match55 »

I have couple 3.2g bucket, when i do water change, do I add salt to each one to make the salinity at 1.002 (each bucket); and next water change to 1.004 and so on?
when the salinity get to 1.018-1.022, what live plant should i use for my puffer?
At what salinity I need to change to SW bacteria??
Do I need a skimmer since it gonna change from brackish to marine?
Is live rock hard to keep in a GSP tank?

I am so confuse right now, and if someone can tell me step by step how they set up their GSP tank, that will be great?
I might have more questions later, i want to be prepare before i killed my puffer.

How large is your puffer? Details on this in the GSP article in our Library.

i asked some of those questions in the LFS
now i want to know how you guys set up a sump?
and if i slowly change my brackish to marine, do i have to take my puffer out to cycle the tank again when I change the sand and add live rocks?

As your puffer reaches adulthood at around 4" (although they should keep growing until 6"), you will be slowly raising the SG (this should take about 2-3 yeatrs). By the time you get it up to around 1.018, the SW bacteria will have developed fully in there & you'll only need to take the puffer out to add the sand & rock. These should be purchased from a fully established tank or the rock should be cycled in a rubber tub or the likes.

So i don't need to buy SW bacteria to add it to the tank? it will develop when i raise the SG?
Thank you so much PP

it will develop as the SG rises....

as long as you don't raise the SG more than 0.002 a week the bacteria will progress nicely.

woo, so i m using FW bacteria, and if i raise the SG 0.002 every water change, the FW bacteria will become SW bacteria? is that right?
That's cool XDDD

suddenly a question pup up in my mind....
say i have a 46g tank, SG at 1.000 and i do a 50% water change , that's 23g, so
i prepare a 23g of new water (SG 1.002), then put it back to the tank... but
should the 50% water (SG 1.000)that left in the tank mix with the SG 1.002 water, then will the whole tank only raise 0.001 arrrrrrrrrrrrrr i m confusing myself..[= =]

can someone clear that for me... how exactly can i raise the salinity 0.002 for the whole tank every week??

yes... if you do a 50% water change from freshwater, with the new water having an SG of 1.002, the resulting SG of the tank with be 1.001

if the new water you are putting in the tank had an SG of 1.004, on a 50% water change that would raise the SG to 1.002

but... if say your tank had an SG of 1.006, and you wanted an SG of 1.008, you would mix your 50% new water to an SG of 1.010

so when you do your 50% water change, mix your new water to an SG of 0.004 higher than your current SG

ok, let see if i get this right (if i do 50% change)
1.000 to 1.002 need new water SG 1.004
1.002 to 1.004 need new water SG 1.006
1.004 to 1.006 need new water SG 1.008
1.006 to 1.008 need new water SG 1.010
~~~~
1.018 to 1.020 will need new water SG 1.022
is there formula for it , like if i only want to do 3g water change, how do i know what SG i need for that 3g out of a 46g tank?
that's right...
there probably is a formula, it's ratios like if you want to do a 25% water change and up the SG in your tank from 1.006 to 1.008 your 25% new water would have to have an SG of 1.014
