differetn between aqurium salt and marine salt

Post by match55 »

I went to the LFS yesterday, and ask them which one is better for my little spotted puffer. they told me i should use the Aqu salt, but then I read an article in here said I need to use marine salt to set up the tank.
Anyone puffer pro can tell me how you set up your tank for your puffer? what kind of salt you use.

side question. anyone feed your puffer with the seafood that sell in the market?

yes he is right you use marine salt, they both raise the specific gravity of the water but the aquarium salt doesnt add any trace elements in the water it is just basic salt, the marine salt has alot of trace elements in it that help create more natural water for the puffer, there is a whole chemistry side of it if your interested i think it has a thread somewere on the forum, but simply put marine is the way to go for a brakish tank.

Yeah, even the educated pet store around here even insists that you use aquarium salt for puffer tanks. When I told them I use marine salt they acted like they had no clue what that was and once again told me to use aquarium salt as it would benefit all my fish. x_x

As you read in that article, using Aq salt in every tank is not only unnecessary but can be bad for softwater fish.
