New Tank?
OK so I might be getting a new tank since I need a qt anyway. I was thinking of moving my over crowed tank into a 30 gallon(if I can find one for cheep) and using my 14 gallon as a qt tank. So I have never waited to cycle a tank because I am impenitent. The 14 gallon right now is kinda brackish the sg isn't very high. I was wondering if I moved the rocks, filter and plants into the new tank will it be cycled enough to move my fish in right away? I know there is an article in the library but I am going to be turning my 14 gallon into a salt water qt tank. I am going to bring up the sg in the salt water tank slowly so as to not kill my bacteria. Or could I instant cycle my 14 gallon salt water as well with a filter from my salt water tank? I don't know if I will be getting a a new tank but I am hoping that I can find one since I need a qt and a bigger tank.

As long as you move over all the stuff and don't add any more fish, it should be just as well cycled as the tank the stuff came from. Your salt water tank is having cycle problems, so it's filter wont' cycle the 14 gallon. My advice - move everything, then get an extra filter for the 14, I recommend an aquaclear 30. Then, run that on the 55, and leave it there until a fish needs to be quarantined. When that time comes, move the filter to the 14, and it should cycle the tank all at once.

So how long should I run the old filter on the new tank I just got it today and I put everyone in and they seem fine. But its a 14 gallon filter on a 29 gallon tank, I have an aquaclear 70 that I want to put on there but I can't run them both at the same time because of the top.

What kind of media does the small filter use? Many kinds can be stripped to just the filtering material(sponge or some kind of quilting) and that can be tucked into the aquaclear right above the sponge.

Its a whisper and it has loose carbon and a pad over it so I don't know if I can put it in there or not. I lost 2 of my glow fish but the rest of them are very happy in their home.

You can take the "bio bag" off the frame and cram it into the aquaclear easily enough.

But its open on one end and I don't want all the carbon to get out, I don't know if it could get in the tank or not but I am going to keep the small filter on there at least for another day or two. Everyone is looking good and my levels are all where they should be so I'm not too worried about it, if the levels get high I will change over to the big filter.
