Carinotetraodon irrubesco

Hi,

Very new to puffers so apologies if I've crossed threds with another topic.

I bought what I thought were dwarf puffers, but I think they are (in the title) Carinotetraodon irrubesco. I don't mind at all, as I'm really into my fish, but wanting to check the best way to care for them.

I was advised they wouldn't eat anything big, and wouldn't bother with snails, but anything that goes in the tank bar ottos gets eaten asap.

Could anyone advise their experience? I have 6 in a 90l tank, and I'd thought they wouldn't grow, so already saving for a new tank.

I was sold them as a variant of dwarf puffers which I realise now they're not. They seem perfectly happy with each other in the tank though, and have no problem with each other.

I wonder if it's because they are still juvenille? If so will they need a much larger tank if they grow?

Alternatively I could have made a massive error in identification!

i think 6 in a 90 is ok as long as there temperments are ok with each other ( not to sure on there bioload)

They should be fine, just be careful for aggression. Do you have another tank incase they become aggressive towards one another?

I think it's a little small...
I have 4 in a 120l...
Is there one male and 5 females?

Remember they can easily change into small devils.

They seem quite happy together, and I think it may be one male to five females (if that helps) based on the colouration coming out in one only.

I have a 125l community tank which is within the bio tolerance of my 90l tank so could swap them over, but would rather not. I've also got a 20l "fry" tank which can be used to separate one if needed.

To be honest, I've found them nothing but happy with each other, and they each have their own little hiding place in the plants so that I need to double check to find them all in the morning! I think a larger puffer tank could be calling......

Oh it's 90 liters?!?
That's way overstocked then, they need about 10-20 gallons per fish. I think an upgrade would be a very good idea.

Read about the puffers in the pufferpedia...
The puffers can live in a 90l for a little wile. (just hope that no one gets killed)
If you really like your puffers and maybe wants fry in the future I would give them the best.
I have two salivators in a 240l because I can and want them to have the best.

glad you found your way here, these guys really know their stuff...

if you have no agression then great, just keep a general eye on them and if you notice any trouble you'll need a plan B...

bigger tank for christmas maybe? Never a bad thing.
