300/400l puffer tank

i`m new to all this and set my goal of doing a puffer tank with lots of live plants / drift wood and caves

been researching on the puffer site for the last few weeks and deciced to go with dwarf puffers or south american

the tank im hoping to buy will be either a juwle rio 300 or 400 as these sems to suit my needs , i think i will need to get an extra pump and filter on there once the the tank is up and running

has any1 had any experience on what im trying to do , basicly im starting from scratch and im aiming to get the tank up and running with the plants in in the next few weeks

what plants and substrate would u guys recomend

this could be a dream, if you go for either, you could easily accomodate 10 dp's !! even allowing for
wood, plants etc, you obviously have a big room !!

I keep 4 dp's in JUWEL 125 litre pics are in my user gallery, I prefer gravel and rocks but others go with sand,

IMHO the filter with the tank should be OK provided you regularly clean out uneaten food (nearly always bloodworm
and crushed prawn for dp's) also, check out the articles on here re cycling yr tank very,very important

Try to house only one species. Either SAP or DP's!!! Dont judge the DP's by its look and size. They are extremely agressive. They will pick on any fish even 3 times their size. DP's love snails ..go for ramshorn snals which u can probably get it free in a LFS or petco/petsmart. They are consider pest and also the baby ramshorn is very small. Good enough size for DP's to eat.

SAP are a very very active fish. They like to swim all over the place. If your tank is not heavily decorated. They will swim against the glass all the time. They are also very interactive. Try to feed them bloodworms which mine love. After awhile they will know who you are and beg for food. The problem with SAP is beak teeth. You have to perform dentistry from time to time or you can feed them snails to file it down.

I use riverbed sand substrate for the DP's and SAP"s for the natural amazon river look. Be sure to rinse the sand before you put in the tank. Will probably take you couple of days. As for driftwood..be sure to cure it. Soak in hot water or boil it. This might take you few days or weeks becasue it will turn your water color from the tannis coming out of the wood. Dont forget that drriftwood will lower your pH. So be sure to check it from time to time.

very nice dp tank premo , if i could get mine looking like that i will be chuffed , i think i will go for sap`s aslong as my local shops can get hold of them as the g/f has seen some pics of them being in tanks with a few other fish and also ive read a few blogs articles where it says many have been sucessfull with this

i think the tank will be 260l now as theres a bargin on ebay lol

Good luck with The SAPs. Be sure to read libary about puffer dentistry. You need clove oil to put them to sleep which you can get at a herbal store. Around L.A. you can buy it from GNC.

Be sure to avoid long finned fish when choosing tankmates, when I tried this they sampled any long fins, though they never attempted to actually bite other fish on their bodies.

I have the Rio 400 and its a great tank as is the 300

Though they have an internal filter it is the best on the market with a large capacity to rival that of most external filters. You may well want to upgrade to the larger pump model or consider adding an additional external if you decide to have a large group of puffers, in a 400 I would think you could have a least 15 DP but from a distance the tank would look emtpy. SAP would be great but then you have the worry of Dentistry
