Does rapid drop (or increase) in salinity affect bacteria?
I know that the beneficial bacteria in freshwater is not the same as with brackish and salt water tanks but i was wondering if a sudden change in salinity would affect the beneficial bacteria on my tank?
I keep mine at 1.008 but today i did a water change and spilled some of the water containing the last of the salt i had. Now the salinity in my tank is around 1.004. I was just wondering if the sudden drop would have any negative effects on my tank or fish...

You may be OK--you're still in the range of mostly FW bacteria, with some SW bacteria starting to develop.

I do that pretty often to simulate an estuary (I have other tanks in case of trouble).
If it works for you, you'll know by simply measuring your nitrItes (and possibly ammonia).
No nitrites, no problems.

Once I dropped mine from 1.004 to 1.000 and nothing happened. Is there only risks if you raise it too fast? I'd like to know more about it...

The abstract is basically saying that the spp. of bacteria that perform the majority of nitrification ("good bacteria") in natural systems is a different majority than the bacteria that perform nitrification ("good bacteria") in aquariums, and that how it works in the real world is likely much more complex than in our simple aquariums.
