Hello and thanks to everyone who helped make this site it is by far the most useful place for puffers.
My wife and I recently got a 3 GSP's, (See im learning the lingo!) Like most everyone else I soon found out after reading up here about everything i didnt know! and that the Wal-mart guy and fish store guy had not much of a clue either. I bought aquarium salt I now have ocean salt.
Tommorrow im gonna go buy a 30 gallon tank, (2 of my little cuties passed on) one is very active my wife named him Shemp! I am gonna start my tank cycling tommorrow once i get it. I have the advantage of living near Tributarys and Brackish areas. My plan is simple im gonna take my saltwater meter and find a nice local area to get some soil and water to start my process.
By doing it this way will it help speed up my time of cycling my tank? And will I have to take any specific pre-cautions? hopefully i can get this little guy out of the 10 gallon tank and away from his 6 tank mates. 2 Guaramies, 2 neon orange fish, 1 Catfish and a Little shark type of fish.

Welcome to the forum!
I'd reccomend not using local water and soil stuff, it could contain contaminants which will harm your fish. Read the fishless cycling article in the library, if done right with ammonia it can be done in less than a week. You could add the filter media from the 10 gallon into the 30 gallon as a way of jump starting the cycle too.

Re: Hello Im new!
Alright thanks. I was hoping that pulling out some natural brackish soil and water would help speed up the process. I was gonna add the the filter to the new tank while it cycles. The pump and filter is for a 10-30 gallon tank on the box so hopefully it lwill be well suited for the 30 gallon tank.

Welcome to the forums!
I would also recommend against adding soil and or water from a local source as it could contain contaminates or bacteria which could harm your fish. We have some great articles in the library that you can read up on.

Re: Hello Im new!
There is not much bacteria in the water, so it will not help much. The fastest way would be to dose the tank with ammonia.
