It probably means he was hungry, which most puffers are all the time. Some react like dogs when they are fed. He was most likely hanging out by the filter because it provides a little cover like a hiding spot. My puffers hang out by the filter and heaters all the time. Also, since your temp was so high, that reduces the amount of oxygen in the water. As the water moves through the filter, it comes in contact with the air and absorbs oxygen, perhaps the puffer is staying there so it can breathe easier.

You're doing really well, alot of people would have been so overwhelmed by all this they'd have not bothered!

It's hard work but you can get them through the cycling process (I had too.. similar situation to you) by keeping up the water changes daily until the tank has cycled.


Keep testing your water as it'll show how your cycle is progressing...


when you get your 10 gallon, transfer all the gravel/sand from the small tank and the filter into the new tank without letting them dry out, you want to keep as much of the new friendly bacteria that will be beginning to grow as possible.. also transfer about 50% of the old water, and add 50% new water, matching the temperature to help.

Then re-float your new friend as if he was new, just to minimise stress...

Well, the heater on high was to much and the heater on low was to little. Came down stairs and the water was at 60, but I was to late to fix it. I miss the little guy.

My sister gave a a fish, and I have figured out it is called a "green spotted puffer" or something to that affect. I had a fish tank and she no longer wanted the fish (had just gotten it from walmart) so I took it. Now I see I am in over my head! It is in a 2 gal tank (I think it is 2 gal, maybe 1 1/2) and that is the only tank I have. I hope to get a lager tank later this month, but for now it is just not in our budget. It seems to be happy right now, but I dont want it to die so soon.

I understand I need to add salt to the water. Can I use table salt for the time being? I can get to pets smart tomorrow night to get salt.

What kind of salt should I get?

I have read they need to eat snails. Are those the huge snails, or the itty bitty ones that breed like crazy?

What do they eat other then snails?

Do I need to provide a place for him to hide?

He is kinda hanging out at the bottom of the tank, is that normal?

Do I need to heat the water? Can I do that without buying a expensive heater?

I do not have a filter, but I do have a little thing that puts bubbles in the water, does that do anything? How often should I change the water and add new?

I am sorry if I am asking to much, I am just so in over my head and I really dont want this little guy to die. I really like him, lol.

Sorry for your loss, Puffers are actually not very difficult to kept, they just require a little special attention. Do your research and next time you and the fish will be much happier.
