Something is wrong with Hufflepuff

Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!
Forum rules
Read this before posting!!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

Either I am blind, or I have a very short memory (which is true, the memory thing). I missed your post, Crazedpuffer.
crazedpuffer wrote:Isn't he the one who bit you?
Yes, he's the one. It didn't make me love him any less, though. Only a bit more nervous when working in his tank.
Well it would help if you answered all the above questions in red! :D
Isn't it a relief when someone does this in the first post? I want what's best for him, you know. And of course, I've been through it before, being asked to answer all those questions :D
Sharing equipment could lead to disease.
I know, but I can't keep 24 different sets of equipment (I have 24 tanks running now, and one more to be put into action as soon as I manage fix it). And I use that In&Out thing (if you know what I mean) when I change water. My tanks are all over my house (both of my livingrooms, my bedroom, my kitchen and the entrance), so keeping a single place to store water before putting it into the tanks, and carrying all the water I take out of the tanks when changing water to the bathroom, is...well, very heavy and very bad for my back. It's only two tanks I don't share any eqipment with. One because I am afraid of transfering any nasty diseases from it (I've had a lot of them there), and one where I am afraid of transfering any diseases into (where my very expensive zebra plecos are).
Do you have any idea how old Huflepuff is?
No. He was fully grown when I bought him. I came across him when I came to pick up my salivator. We got a connection there and then in the shop. It looked like he fell in love with me, and I absolutely fell in love with him. I've never seen anything like it with any of my other puffers. He was and still is very special :D Even though he bit me...
He might just be moody for no reason.
He's been moody for a long time. That's what worries me. BTW, he went back to hiding behind the sticker again after a few minutes of acting normal.
All I can think of myself, is trying to get back to more frequent WC again. I've been terribly lazy lately (and my In&Out thing is partly broken, which means water changes are a lot more heavy to do). It's not only Hufflepuff who is a bit moody.

I've been having those problems too with W/C. Once I have a little more free time I'm sure everyone will be much happier here!
And that bite only made him more special right Inger Anne?!

I knew it was just a matter of time before it would happen. Luckily he only got my nail, so it didn't hurt. But he took a piece out of the nail (on the upside!), so I know he would have drawn blood if he had hit anything else. He has tried biting me through the glass several times, but usually he goes to the other side of the tank when I put my hands into it. That time he caught me off guard, though.
But he is one of my most beloved fishes, :smitten: and that means I know him pretty well. And something is just not right now. He has never been like this before. And his change of resting place puzzles me. He has had the same place to rest all the time I've had him, and now he has moved to the top of the filter, which is too small for him (or he is too big for it  ). It looks unconfortable. But I'm no fish, so I really can't judge about that.

Yes :-D I've bought many of my puffers there (my suvatti, my two irrubescos, my salivator and Hufflepuff). And I know you've delivered one there too. That one was named turgidus, and I didn't buy it  (but I considered it, though). I didn't even see him properly. He had come to the shop recently, and was into hiding yet. But it was about the time I bought Hufflepuff, or was it the suvatti, I can't remember.

Well, there's nothing wrong with Hufflepuff's aggression! He tried to bite me again now (but missed, luckily), and was really furious with me for doing tank work (changing water, and cleaning up one of the filters). I've never seen him so angry before! Well, this raised level of aggression can come from your theory of making eggs, Woland. I would suspect a puffer to be more aggessive at spawning time.

The good news is that I will get the new piece for the broken one in my In&Out thing tomorrow. That will make WC easier to deal with again, and I can raise the frequenzy :-D Because with such a big puffer in such a small tank, 50 % weekly is too little.

Changing ~80-90% of water once a week could easy your job instead of changing 50% twice a week, right? That's what I do.

As I don't store the water before pumping it into the tank, but takes it directly from the tap, I don't dare to. The differences in water parameters could be too big. But when the In&Out works, it's not much job. And I got good news from my Pet Shop: the new piece for my In&Out has arrived. I can pick it up tonight. :D Water changes will get easier again today. :D

Hufflepuff seems to be in better mood today. He greeted me like normal, when I came back after walking my dog. I am so happy to see that! I don't know whether it will stay that way, but it's an improvement.

Hehe, yeah. I did a water change yesterday for my Ceylons, and they weren't very impressed with me. The two of them hid on a rock cave I made with their tails curled at their sides, and they didn't come out until about 15 minutes after I was finished. Then, whenever me or my gf went to the glass, they give us a quick glance, turn their backs to us, and swim away. Haha! Such moody little fish!

My gf wasn't happy and told me to "stop breaking the fish!"

They'll get use to it. Our ceylons are very very moody. Hope you have a tank cover, sometimes when our's get spooked they try to jump.

I think I have solved the problem. It's the light (that became brighter when I cleaned the cover glass). I was up all night yesterday, and didn't get to bed until 7 am. And then he was acting like he has always done. I was very happy to see that. Now he is back to sulking behind the filter. And when I saw that, I realized that the light doesn't cover that part of the tank. I am very relieved! Well, no cleaning of the cover glass from now on.

Can I get some floating plants? Almost all my tanks are infested with, is it duckweed it's called in English? :censored: I hate it very, very much. It's just absolutely impossible to get rid of (it's even in the icecream boxes where I keep the cory fry). The tank of Hufflepuff has it too. I did a cleanup on that too, at the time I washed the cover glass, so that contributed to the more light.

I'm glad to tell that Hufflepuff is back to his old self, even at daytime now. He sometimes uses his old hiding place too, but it seems like he has made the place on top of the filter his favorite place. I think it was a combination of the bright light and less water changes than normal. Now I've been changing 50 % water every other day, and that seems to do the trick (special care for Hufflepuff  ). I am so relieved! :grin2:
