Re: ceylon puff.. new tank, pics
I've been iffy on using dollar store plants, simply because I'd assume they were made with material that was too cheap... I also figured by the time I whipped up a bunch of things, it'd end up costing the same as if I'd just bought 24 silk plants from Ebay for like $70... but maybe I'll go take a look and see what there is! I have a bunch of aquarium-safe silicone sitting around, so maybe I'll put it to good use.
Thanks for the advice!

Re: ceylon puff.. new tank, pics
i want a really natural tank for this one... i want it o look like a slice through a mangrove type swamp...
so i want roots (24in high ones) that go all the way to the top of the tank.. then a load of plants that go al the way along to about 2/3 way up the tank, maybe some taller, leaving the top of the tank open for free swimming..
I have a great root but it's only 18inches tall... fine when the tank was half full...

But now it's full the root isn't tall enough....
think i'm gonna end up sticking two roots together so that it reaches the top of the tank... not good at £25 a go.....

Yeah, that definitely gets expensive! After hearing the comment that driftwood can basically melt in saltwater, I'm opting to move my beautiful 2 foot mounted wood to my 28 gallon, where I'll hopefully be keeping Irene's Abei puffer!

ah ha... it's not real driftwood... it's plastic... or some poly something resin.
If it was real, it would be a ALOT cheaper... but fooled you!

That is an absolutely gorgeous piece of fake wood, hehe.
Can't help you with the natural-looking plants, though.
Agnate, we actually did a lot of looking around at aquarium plants in our LFSs and from what we could tell, it was pretty much exactly the same thing, just really REALLY marked up price-wise. We even ripped apart (a little bit) the one plant we got from an LFS and it was the same thing as the ones we got from the dollar store equivalent, so that's why we ended up with it. The base definitely doesn't look as nice, but we got more selection, and it was definitely cheaper. We filled the entire tank with plants for maybe around $60-70 worth of plants, while our 1 plant we got from an LFS cost $16 on its own. But if you can find cheap ones on eBay, it's probably more worth it than running around and spending hours with breathing in stinky silicone.

Re: ceylon puff.. new tank, pics
whenever kirby gets up against the glass, her body doesnt look very smooth, i think i can see the little spines, they just dont poke out her body. hehe she takes snails from my hand and if i put my hand in without food, she investigates it for a while then usually nips at it and it cracks me up!
another very funny thing is one of my dps will attack my fingertip if its on the glass! i put my hand in near him and it just feels like little nudges lol, i think his mouth is too small for me to feel his beak like i feel kirbys.

Re: ceylon puff.. new tank, pics
How big's your Ceylon?
When we got bit it was actually partly on purpose. For me anyway, I figured I might as well get my curiosity out of the way now while they're still too small to do any real damage, and DANG it hurt >.< When, or if, they really do reach 8" standard length, there is NO way I'm letting them near my fingers. I like them too much.

Re: ceylon puff.. new tank, pics
Heehee, I just saw little Allakazam passed out in the sand last night! He's soooo cute! His nose was touching a shell, and his tail was pointing up (about a 70 degree angle), and he was asleep. I walked by, and he kinda looked around and swam over to me (quite drowsily)! Puffers are so funny, haha.t1gerbee wrote:Do your ceylons sleep at night?

Aaw, an inch and a half. How long have you had it and how big was it when you got it? Any chance of (more if you've already posted some) pictures?
Ours were only an inch, if that, when we got ours...so tiny. Now they're so fat, haha. They're so much cuter when they're fat.
Haha, I love watching them swim when they first get up. Do yours bump into things? Ours never seem to look where they're going, even after they bump into stuff, they just look confused cuz something's impeding their way, and then try again.
