55 Gallon Biotype Aquarium for GSP

I am planning on having a 55g brackish biotype aquarium for two GSP. Can anyone give me some insight on what other fish they would be compatible with? And if anyone has some pictures of this type of aquarium, I would love to see them

With that size tank 2 GSP's would be all you have room for as they req aprox 30g per fish. GSP can be very aggressive and in most cases are better off solo in a tank. I have 2 babies together and have witnessed them biting each other. If you add a lot of plants and decor to break up the line of sight between them that will help.

As for the bio type aquarium I can't help you with that.

I know they do. We actually have plans on upgrading the tank to a 75g in the near future, but we have the 55g now. We could always get one and add another one later. I have had a GSP puffer before who was a joy, and plan on not having the tank planted but using plenty of silk plants for the natural effect.

where do GSP'S naturally occur in the wild anyway??

They come from Asia. If you want to em to get along, I suggest growing them up together as juvies.

Well if they are from asia you could have java fern, java moss, and thats pretty much all of the asian plants i know of.

if you want tow together then get two together...

otherwise one will establish a territory and then dominate and bully the new arrival...

keep an eye on them and be prepared to separate if any problems, also keep a bottle of melafix around incase of injurys!


Java etc will not be able to keep up with the level of salt needed to keep GSP happy as they grow... unless you have another freshwater tank to transfer the plants into as salt level in your GSP tank rises.

I'm guessing that Bio type means it's original environment...?

If so, all I know is that they come from south east asia. also that they live in lakes rivers and flood plains, so you could really do anything you wanted...

Thanks for all the tips. I am planning on introducing them both at the same time, and as the last fish in the aquarium due to their aggressive nature. I wasn't planning on having any alive plants because of the brackishwater and since the puffers like lower lighting. I also was planning on plastic or silk plants because they are easier to rearrange if there is a territory dispute.

I don't even know if you can put other fish with them. I suppose you can try Mollies while they're small, and if you keep the puffers well fed, they (hopefully) won't destroy them.

... I wouldn't get too attached to the Mollies, though.

I hate mollies! LOL. I'm planning on putting in a knight goby as I haven't read anything about GSP needing to be solitary.

I don't know if Knight Gobies can go to high-end brackish. Can someone confirm that for us?

I am pretty sure the Knight Goby will not tolerate high end brackish tanks, just lowend so that wouldn't be a good tankmate for a GSP. Most people either keep their GSPs alone since their water requirements change as they grow or they just wait until they are full grown and move them to marine and get saltwater tank mates.

Pretty sure they can, probablly not the best thing for them, but they could live in it.
