ceylon puff.. new tank, pics

The king prawn was dead when it went in the tank.... it was frozen and bought at sainsburys....!

He doesn't eat the whole head, i fish it out after a bit.. which annoys him... but i don't want him to explode.

He was probably about 2 inches.. so he's doubled in size. He was a poorly, unhappy puff when i got him, so i'm extra proud

I do feed live river shrimp, and sometimes feel guilty, but you can see right through them... so they they just can't have any intellect so i don't mind too much..

Nice pics and puff! How long did it take him to double in size? Our 2 are about 3ish inches, the went from 1.25"-3" in about 1 year.

No they're not, they're about 2" standard length right now, with about 0.5" of tail wiggling about. Though they have grown quite a bit in girth.

Anyway, back to actual thread... Have you seen any spines on him? One of ours keeps freaking me out, 'cause every once in a while, I'll see a bunch of his spines and wonder if it's ich.

Haven't seen anything that could look like spines, infact i'm always amazed how smooth he looks...

If it's ick, wouldn't there be evidence on the fins... that's where I always look on my lionfish as he's got so many markings and strange dots its impossible to see them anywhere else...

his fins are clear, spots are easy to.... spot...

What other fish are they in with? can you raise or lower the SG just incase... ?

No, the tanks are all at Nusquam's place.

We are sure it's his spines now, but we do "raise and lower" the SG by not topping off the tank from evaporation. Just 2 ceylons in a 120g

The tanks are all at my place, so I guess technically I'm getting Devlin, though, Spoot does most of the big things, so it's almost like joint custody?

Does your puff try to bite your finger when you put your hand in? Has he actually gotten a chunk yet?

he got a bite once when i decided to hand feed him a prawn... don't think his eye sights that good and he decided that my finger was a prawn...

but he's never taken a chunk out!!!

I tried to hand feed him a prawn the other day and he just kept swimming round the back of the prawn as was eyeing up my fingers instead... so i chickened out and just threw it in for him.


But he won't go after my hand if it's just generally in the tank... he scoots off.

Shared custody of fish... that's brilliant.


My other half prefers the tv to the fish..

You have one good looking puffer there. Delvin is also a cutie. I can't wait to see some updated pictures. BTW I have 2 GSP's in a 125 Gallon. But I will be adding a Porcupine puffer Feb. 13th. I also have plans just in case there is aggression.

Hehe, I've noticed with my two little darlings that they enjoy investigating my arm whenever I put it in the tank. They usually start to do their one-quarter rotation (indicating that they're considering taking a nip at me), so I usually just move my hand closer, and they back up and scurry off. They're so funny, heehee.

Compared to sticking my hands in my lio infested marine, i'd take the brackish any day!



It's nice to have someone to talk specifics about ceylons too... everyone seems to have GSP's!


Do your ceylons sleep at night?

I get a bit neurotic when mine sometimes does, he goes very dark... but as soon as i switch the light on in the morning he gets up and about and bright white again....

Also.. do you get any agression between your two? Or is the aggression purely aimed at you?

Sleeping puffers, what are those? I swear, mine haven't slept in days, haha! Every time I see them, they're always staring back at me with those cute little eyes! And no, I've yet to see ANY aggression between mine. In fact, they often swim around and beside each other. Even when they eat and one of them steals a worm, they don't get aggressive. Little Pickles and Allakazam are the bestest of friends! ^_^

It's definitely nice having other Ceylon owners around Though, they are similar enough to GSPs that it shouldn't really matter.

Ours have definitely gotten aggressive to each other once in a while. As I mentioned somewhere else, every few months we'll find little bite marks on them, but it's never bad or frequent enough for it to really be a big deal. They'll follow each other around sometimes, but not really in a friendly way, more like siblings would follow each other around just cuz they're bored or want to bug each other. The bigger one tends to follow the smaller one around when he's hunting, and the smaller one will try to lose the bigger one by going one way and then another. It's actually quite amusing to watch, though I'm sure Donkey (the smaller one) doesn't think so.

They do seem to be more aggressive towards certain people than others. Lately they've been really scared of me, but it might have been the jammies I've been wearing around them. When Spoot's brother came to see them, he stuck his finger at the glass, and they attacked with so much gusto. I've never seen them try so hard to get at something through the glass before. They tend to be scared of my mom and sisters as well, but really like my niece for some reason. *shrugs*

Ya, our guys sleep at night, though they're really light sleepers. If I leave the hallway light on too long, they'll come see what's going on. I used to love waking them up in the morning, cuz they'll be all drowsy and tipsy, and generally uncoordinated, bumping into things and looking confused and what not. But they've been waking up quicker and quicker, so it's harder to catch them doing that.

For some reason ours will go dark every once in a while. But it doesn't seem to be a stress thing, almost a camouflage thing, so we don't really fret too much about it. They're usually really bright and shiny when they first get up, though.

Mine are only in a 55 gallon right now, but it's plenty big enough for the little 1.5 inch fellas.

Pickles and Allakazam get really skittish when I turn the lights off at night. They usually dart around for 10 seconds until they realize it's bed-time! They're getting kinda bored in the tank though, as I don't have any plants yet (I've spent WAY too much money in the past couple weeks and can't really afford plants right now). They'll just have to wait, I s'pose.

i've got the same problem. I ahve a few plants but i need really big ones.. like 24 inches high and they're soooo expensive.

3 weeks til payday then i think i'll raid ebay.

If you're willing to do some arts and crafts, aquarium-style, then it can actually get quite cheap. We made all the decorations (except for the pirate ship) that's in our tank now. We got those fake plants from the dollar store (well, dollar store equivalent with better stuff), glued them onto PVC pipes (with silicone, I think?), which were glued to leftover granite pieces. According to Spoot, granite people usually throw away the smaller pieces anyway, so if you ask them, they should give it to you for free or sell it to you for really cheap.
