Noob in training

Good day everyone!
How are the good folks here doing? I have read alot and have decided on a Fahaka puffer. I love them!! I have had stingrays before so I know about all the basics. The questions i have searched for but to no avail. I will have a 2" Fahaka in a 50 gallon tank. Dont kill me! wait.... I already have a 120 for him (old stingray tank) but for now untill he becomes a adult I will keep him in it for now. My questions are: I have 2 Aqauclear 110's on the back and a powerhead good enough for a 30 gallon tank. I heard (please confirm for me) that they dont like powerful streams. Is this true? Also I am using these hob filters because a friend gave me them so for the price ...they rock!!! Any suggestions on filtration ? If this would suffice? Also I have read alot about sand vs gravel. I figure I should get the best answer coming from this forum.
I hear its preference but what are they use to in Africa? What kind of decor do you recommend ? I know they rip up real plants so obviously none of those but I wanted to see your setups so I can get a idea for him. I hear they rip up fake plants as well. We cant win for even trying....lol Any ideas ior recomindation's would be greatly appreciated!!!

1 of those filters should suffice on a 30g. I use 2 AC 500s (I believe they are the same as the 110) & an Eheim canister on my 125g.

Welcome to the forum!
I'd suggest putting him in that tank ASAP, to help prevent any stunting and will be much easier to move it.

I keep live plants with my fahaka. He used to bite them but now he just leaves them alone. I have a picture of an old tank setup in my user gallery. I took the cave out though because he never used it.

Yes, the Aquaclear 500 are the old model. The new ones are 110's. Another question is when they say 500gph in a 50 gallon tank it would turn over 10x? (or is it when they say its good for 100 gallon is that what you measure the "turn over rate") if that makes sense? So I should be good with two of them then.

Your tank looks beautiful. Thats the kind of setup I want !! The nice natural look.
Also should I turn the flow to the minimum setting or maximum ? What do you recommend?

I had some plants in my fahaka tank but he apparently likes salad. I am in the process of getting some slate to add to the tank for some decoration. I have to do something for him because he is ill with me for taking out his favorite cave so I could get the hair algae off of it.

They are great puffers to have.

Thanks alot!! I love the support here. Thats why I came to this forum.
Any suggestions on the flow for the filters. Do they like fast or slow moving water in the tank? Would a black background look good? I figure it will give the tank some depth. Also how do you upload pics onto here? It says only 6kb? All my pics are bigger...... someone can pm the details. Thanks

Puffers seem to prefer tanks with backgrounds. Fahakas come from the Nile River, so they like some flow, although I don't add any extra, other than my 3 filters. He mostly hangs out on the bottom & I've never seen him play in the flow.

Probably be alright in the 50 until around the 8" mark, safe nitrate levels permitting.

Agreed. Though, personally, if you could get him set up in a 120 gallon when he's only 2-3 inches, he'd have one helluva time in there! I know I'd love the space!

I've heard mixed reviews on the flow stuff. Some puffers will play in the flows, others don't care much for it. Maybe try out a small powerhead and see if he likes it! As long as it's not the equivalent of a jet engine, it shouldn't blow him around too much in the 50 gallon.

My smallest GSP loves playing in the flow now that he is in the larger tank.
