what type of puffer is this?

i bought one today at a japanese fish store (i live in japan) today and well, i do have experience with Amazon Puffers. My recent puffer was eaten by my crayfish not too long ago and to cover up my sadnesss i bought another one. When i got home i discovered this "Amazon Puffer" looked kinda different. It looked more like a cross between an Amazon Puffer and a Spotted Puffer. Its front was amazon and its back was spotted. wdf? xD what kind of pufferfish is this?

it has three fat bars at the top and the rest are little spots

It looks to me like you have a Tetraodon Fluviatilis (Ceylon Puffer). He is brackish tho.. >.<

We shall see what the consensus is tho. I'm just a low guy on the totem pole.

Looks like a Ceylon, looks more silvery in colour than most you see though.

Such a healthy ceylon, they are so pretty. I met an adult one at someones house that looks amazing. I can not find a aquarium store in a 50 mile radius that can get one

the fish store had em in freshwater.
yes it does look exactly like a ceylon...
all of the websites say they are brackish....
what the heck?

im a beginner at brackish care and uhh i would like to know what would happen to a fish that requires brackish but lives in freshwater. he looks as healthy as my south american puffer.

Haha, you got jacked! Thats what the heck

But on the flip side ya did get another one that if you had specifically asked for.. you probably never would have found one. T. Fluviatilis is just as cool as a SAP, but they do get a wee bit larger and will need slightly different care. I have a SAP but I don't have a Fluviatilis, so

As far as that goes... He is most likely going to be just fine in your FW tank for now because he appears young still. But as he grows larger you might want to start slowly raising your SG. One of the more knowledgeable posters can give you details on salinity levels, or point you in the right direction.

It is definately a ceylon.

A fish that is kept in a water type that is not the preferred one will survive (for a while), but it won't grow to its full potential, live as long as it should (10+ years) and will more than likely suffer from various illnesses and diseases throughout its life due to its immune system being compromised.

A young ceylon will handle freshwater better than an older one, but it will do much better if you move it to brackish and eventually full marine.

alright. thanks you guys. i will try to get a job in the summer (parents keep promising and yet no tank) and buy myself a large enough tank. i hope my new friend will hold out til then...

lmao hes such a cute puffer. he's so gentle towards the other fish. when i put my SAP in there, he just rushed at the other fish, consuming two guppies

Yes puffers flip me out. lol They look all sweet and innocent but then they tear into food like violent lions. My gsp will pick up a mussel and shake it like a rag doll.
