Tetraodon Sabahensis

Finally picked up my very BAD looking Sabahensis Puffs. The LFS had all 3 quite large ( 5+ inches ) Puffers in a small tank, about 30G. I don't know if their the water in their tank was brackish, freshwater or just plain crappy but it was not its best. They told me it was brackish, of course, I didn't believe them because the condition of the fish spoke for them. Of the 4 that were there, I took 3. The 4th they sold to someone else, but I don't think he will make it to the 25th as he is very emaciated, has a black belly and has trouble swiming straight. Also his tail has a large cyst... so I passed on him >.<

I got the 3 home and put them in my new 75g brackish tank ( which has been preparing itself for these guys ). Yes, its a wee small at the moment but I am going for another 55g tank for the extra guy in about a week. I'm kinda hoping I have a pair to breed. When they first got into my tank, 2 of them were swimming around with black bellies and one was laying on the bottom with a very black belly. I fed them 2 crayfish, which they ever so kindly annihilated. After they ate, I watched them for about 15 minutes. The one Sabahensis that was laying on the bottom of the tank began to puke up what he had just eaten. It was rather sad to watch.. I felt so bad. I could see he was not a happy camper. So, I made a small adjustment to the salinity in my tank and treated with a dose of Pimafix because I am 99.9% sure at least one has parasites. After about 10 mins I amazed myself. All 3 Saba's are now happily fluttering around exploring. NO ONE has a black belly anymore, they are all white bellies and they are all eating ! WOOT!

I took quite a few pics of them all. Still not 100% as to whether or not all 3 are actually T. Sabahensis. I will post them as soon as I can find a memory card reader for my camera.

Good luck with them! Pimafix does not correct IPs.

Thanks! I'm kind of hoping that it is NOT parasites, but rather something that pimafix would assist in fighting. I will keep an eye on them. Sorry there haha, I didn't mean to say 'parasites' I meant Ick!

Pimafix is for fungal infections.

Yes but it said on the bottle that it also treats internal and external bacterial infections. They are a bit beat up, so I thought Pimafix would help. Is there something else I should be using ? Do you think I should stop the Pimafix treatment ? I am about to post my newest pics of them, so maybe you want to see what they look like beforehand. Thx

I'd use Melafix. Pimafix is probably OK too, I just thought you were using it for IPs.

I am REALLY hoping they don't have IP's >.<

... though I'm not 100% sure how to get rid of IP's if any puffers have them.

They probably will have IP's, but for now I would just keep them well fed and see what happens.

There's an article on treating IP's in the library, it's not hard to do at all.
