grats on the save.. I've got two F8's (looking for a 3rd) in a 55.. it's amazing how with a little bit of care they can be such healthy lively fish. We went away on vacation so I got them a fiddler crab and 10 ghost shrimp to eat while we were gone. Sure enough when we came back almost 2 weeks later their colors were fading and their bellies were not as white/big as normal. As soon as they saw we were around they perked up, watched us unpack, and after a small water change and some fresh snails (which my F8's devour) their colors were full their bellies were white and fat and they are lively as ever.
Great fish.....

Unfortunately of you don't get them into a larger tank they are going to suffer. I know you wanted to save them and that is great but putting them into a tank too small will cause great problems. If I were you I would look for another tank to split them up or a big 120 to put them all in.

As long as they are <2", they will be OK in the 55g but as soon as they get a little bigger, I definately agree, you're going to have to upgrade to a tank over 2x that size. A 125g would be nice for horizontal swimming room.
You are getting sleepy... you only hear the sound of my voice... you must do water changes... water changes... water changes... water changes...

Couple a tricks about the snails. In an attempt to keep my tank a bit cleaner I feed my F8's with with a net. So they also know when/where the snails and gonna be. They run right to the net (it's amusing)....but... my reason for brining it up is when I have snails that are to big i crack them with my fingers before putting them in giving the F8's something to grapple when they wanna start ripping into the snail.
Also... a suggestion I got from somewhere, prob on this site, set up a 10g tank and use it for breeding snails. Get as many free ones from the LFS as you can and toss them in. It'll take a month or two depending on how many you get in order to establish enough ramshornes that you can remove the babies and keep the stock up. but it's totally worth it. I've got a 20g with some guppies I'm breeding for fun, a few cories but theres probably 50 or so ramshornes and theres more every day.I also typically pick up like 2dozen ghost shirmp every few weeks and just store them in that tank till I'm ready to give my puffers a treat.
