How to make your puffer warm up to u

Post by GaSPs!!! »

I currently own 3 green spotted puffers. The smallest one has a really bubbly personality, he is constantly swimming around and isn't afraid if someone goes near his tank. He never goes into hiding even when the tank lights are on. The other two puffers are giving me a really big headache. As soon as i on my tank lights, they go into frantic swimming mode and hide behind the filter at a corner of the tank. They will only come out if the tank lights are off and no one nears the tank. I have difficulty feeding them too. THe lil one usually gobbles up the food before the other 2 as they do not come out even when i try to tempt them. Should i cordon off that corner of the tank so that they would not be able to hide there and have to get used to being out in the open with the tank lights on? I really want my puffers to warm up to me.

How long has the tank been set up, what size tank, what is the tank water testing at and what are you feeding them? All of this can have something to do with the other 2 gsp's acting scared. Sounds like the 2 gsp's are stressed.

I have 2 baby gsp in a 55 gallon tank. They always compete for the food but they both get their share. I have learned the hard way (the bigger gsp bit the smaller faster eater) when I hand feed whole raw shrimp. I learned to hand feed two shrimp at the same time, one for each so they don't fight over one shrimp. At one point I used a net (BTW, never net a puffer out of water because they can suck in air, a bad thing for them)to keep the smaller faster gsp away from the bigger one so he could eat in peace. When I feed blood worms I add the food in two separate places in the tank being very careful not to overfeed.

Read the GSP and feeding article in the Puffer Library.
They warm up to you over time.

If your puffers only hiding place is behind a corner filter, you need more hiding places.

Create caves, place rocks or plants to make hiding places. If your puffers feel safe, they will begin go show themselves more. Do not remove hidng places, add them.
