Can a GSP poison you?

Post by sparks42 »

I'm sure it can.....but how?
Does it happen when it bites you?...when it puffs and its spines stick out and poke you? I don't think I fully understand.
Can anyone clarify for me?

Bah I hate telling this story, makes me feel ignorant and STUPID. But back when I had two GSP's in a 10 gal, freshwater, no less. I though it was funny cause they would always come up and nip my fingers and my mom told me they would poison me. That always made me laugh..

Almost wish my DP's would come up and nip my fingers D:

Yeah, my first puffers were a disaster though, and I still feel horrible about it. ;_;

It's only safe until they get big enough to make you bleed!

yeah wild puffers are poisonous only if you eat the skin or liver I beleive. they develop the poison from bacteria that live in their natural foods and then store it as their defence. In captivity we feed "clean" food so the likelihood of our puffs being poisonous lowers in relation to how long we have them.

I have never been bitten by a puffer (yet) but I got bit by a large lunar wrasse. Not very nice at all. He and I are still not on good terms. :lol:

I've been bitten a few times when I used to hand feed snails to my full grown F8s. It's not the most comfortable feeling in the world but it doesn't break the skin. If they were any larger I would try to avoid it.

I've been bitten/stung by a disgruntled 3 inch Otto in one of my other tanks... that stung for hours. Clearly size isn't everything!

I doubt eating a GSP or F8 could poison you after it's been raised in a tank for a while, as I believe the bacteria responsible for making the toxin is only found in their natural species of food, so they'll lose it after a while. Not that I'd eat a puffer anyways...

Well, quite poking at it with your finger, silly!

My babyburr is the gentlest nibbler. I am falling more & more in love with him every day. I don't know how I'm going to part with him. :(
