topaz puffer

Hi Guys,

I was looking in my LFS in the UK and noticed that they were selling Topaz Puffers now I spoke with one member of staff and asked if these will be able to survive in freshwater he has 2 currently living in freshwater and according to him they are thriving well. Just need your opinion on this as I am now possibly thinking of getting one, should I or shouldn't I ??

as far as i know the topaz needs to be adapted to brakish and then full marine later on in life...after reading the aqualog book on puffers i see it does survive in freshwater when young but will need brakish m8.

I've seen both Ceylons and Dwarf puffers referred to as "Topaz" puffers. Look in the pufferpedia and check out which one it is. If it's the dwarf, then yes, they are fresh water. If they are Ceylons, then they will need high brackish to marine as adults. One easy way to check is to see how big they are right now. If they are over 2.5cm, then they are definitely NOT dwarfs.
