Hammie the Tetraodon Baileyi

Hi abc,

I can only tell you about Hammie...

He (just my default naming convention) is one active dude. Swims around the entire water column looking for prey and exploring the area.

Agressive (attacked my tweezers while doing some clear up) little fella. He is about 2.5" now... can;t imagine how it would behave when bigger...

Very interactive, comes right up to the front of the tank to spy at anyone who approaches. Hides only when he sleeps, otherwise, he is on patrol of his waters all day.

As experienced by Mandycat... not adviceable to keep with other specimens of the same species. As for non puffer tankmates... I have not the guts to try... One is more than enough... they will captivate you...

thanks so much for the above note... I may be buying from mandycat and so I'll let you know and post some photos on this board if things work out and I can take one of these guys (or girl) home

they sound like a lot of fun

the only other puffer (my female irrubesco) is shy and hides most of the time so having an active puffer will be a treat

Nah, I wouldn't dream of it...

The baileyi is going to have his/her own home in a 29g tank all to herself... with some ghost shrimp and snails as a snack until I get her/him to eat frozen foods

Now if I could find a nice male for my female, may be she'll perk up... I had 5 females together in the 29g previously, I think the 1 remaining one killed the rest of them , and now she's in her own 10g planted tank

Um, I should explain that in the above post, I had 5 irrubesco's in a 29g tank (not the baileyi's), and I wanted to get a male irrubesco for my female irrubesco since she's by herself, but the seller simply ran out of them when I tried to re-order

I thought irrubesco's would be easy to get in your part of the world. I'm in chicagoland and frankly I was so disappointed to lose 4 of them all in one week. I learned that they are best kept in pairs, but the online dealer only sent me females when I asked for a mix. It's really hard and frustrating to find them over in these parts.

They used to be fairly common, but lately only one or two LFS seem to carry them. The one I bought my male from doesn't seem to be bringing any new ones in. The "would-be" wife for my male died on its way out of the shop as explained in one of the earlier posts. I sure to find a mate for it before it begins to think of the ottos in the tank as its wife....

I have actually found it quite easy to find puffers in Chicago. Most LFS will order them for you. I haven't visited Living Sea or Old town Aquarium lately but they can get pretty much anything you want. Coral Reef (my LFS) has ordered many puffers for me too. They have 2 Fangs' there right now.

Thanks for the suggestions pufferpunk! I actually live in the western suburbs so this is the first I've heard of those stores. But if they can get the irrubesco's, it's worth a drive to the city to get them. The ones near my area said they couldn't get them (or it was not worth the effort since I think they are Asian puffers, not South American ones... more expensive to ship apparently). Anyways, I'll give the city stores a shot now

Definately call 1st. Although, I have called & they have said they had no FW puffers & then I'd find them hiding in the back of a tank...
