GSP Food Varieties

I read here what to feed GSP but I would like to know what others feed their Green Spotted Puffers. I'm looking for what kind of shell fish is best to feed them from the grocery store already dead. My puffers are babies aprox 1 1/2 big. They are being fed shrimp pellets, freeze dried blood worms, snails (want to get away from snails) and frozen thawed brine shrimp at this time. I will be adding more variety this week.

I read on here you can feed them squid, clams, oysters, ect... from the grocery store. At 1 1/2 size puffers how do you feed them a clam? Is it ok to put a clam or an oyster in the tank? Do I need to prepare it before doing so?

The snails are actually the most suitable thing listed in their current diet, so I wouldn't stop with them. The brine shrimp and freeze dried food are the best to get them off, and shrimp pellets are alright, though you are lucky your puffer eats them. I'd get tiny shellfish like clams, smash them with a hammer, and let the guys go to work picking the meat out from the shell bits.

Snails are most definately the most healthy thing to be feeding them.

I keep a bag of frozen, raw, shell on shrimp in the freezer. I thaw one out, and let the puffer nibble on it until he's full (just dangle it in the water), then put what's left in a ziploc bag and put that in the fridge for the next day. Of course, now that Paris is getting big she can eat one by herself so there's never any leftovers!

Are you saying I need to stop feeding them the frozen thawed brine and freeze dried bloodworms? We just bought them some freeze dried krill today, is that not good for them? I'm concerned about the frozen defrosted brine shrimp at this point because today was the first day we fed them that and both puffers showed stress an hour after ravishing their meal this morning. Dark gray lines on the belly and and not swimming across the tank in their normal way. They have been hovering in the corners of the tank somewhat.

Good ideas on how to feed them larger food, thanks!

your little puffers are smaller then mine. mines almost 5 inches. so he eats the big stuff. hes not to big on oysters though he does eat it. i rinse it first and i have a feeding clip for him. he loves tiger prawns from the grochery store. loves squid too. i just rinse it all before putting it in

they could have eaten a lot more then what they were use to and now are completley full...they are pigs of the fish world after all

you can feed them Krill. Thats what I feed mine and they love em!!!

krill should not be fed exclusively, as it isn't that nutritious. Bloodworms, frozen prawns, scallops, snails are better.

Be sure to defrost all your frozen foods in water with liquid vitamins in it.

Live ghost shrimp are not pretty nutritious as is, but if you gut load them (feed the veggies such as algae wafers or a good quality herbivore fish food) before you feed them to the puffer, its a good way to "sneak" veggies into your puffer.

where do you guys get your snails? the only ones i can find are those big mystery snails. nobody will sell me the small ones..

Do you know anyone with a pond, if so there should be plenty of snails in there which you can take and then breed em in a tank and then feed the young.
