Tetraodon Sabahensis

Post by Mynn »

Anyone keeping any Sabahensis right now? Do you have them with other fish? What salinity do you recommend? Should you have more than one or just one solo? Are they active for the most part? How much space does one need?

Thanks for any info you can provide!

Thanks PP but I already did and it didn't offer much info.

Common Name: Giant Spotted Puffer

Other Common Names: Indian Giant Puffer

Family: Member of the Fluviatilis family

Distribution: Asia, Indonesia

Water Parameters: brackish environment, seems adaptable to various salinities and does well in hard water with the Ph around 8.

What Salinity exactly are people keeping theirs at?

Personality/Temperament: An extremely interactive puffer once it gets used to its owner. Tankmate info pending.

Anyone have more info on tankmates?

Activity: Activity levels vary, they can be quite inactive during the day choosing to rest on the substrate, in rock crevices or under mangrove roots. Activity levels raising during the later hours of the day and into the evening and night.

Anyone keeping them find this to be true?

Max. Size: 6+" (15+cm)

Estimated Lifespan: 15+ years

Sexual Dimorphism: No physical sexual differences currently known.

Diet: Mussels, Cockles, Prawns, Whitebait. Smaller foods such as bloodworm and krill are usually ignored.

Care: Relatively easy once settled in and feeding well. If belly seems sunken a day after feeding treat for internal parasites.

Breeding: Unknown

Minimum Tank Size: 40+ US Gallons, Due to activity levels a tank in the region of 4ft long is preferable.

40gallons per puffer or just 40 gallons in general?

Other Notes: There seems to be several variants of this species with different body markings that are not typically associated with T. Nirgroviridis or T. Fluviatilis.

Addition: There is currently no definitive identification of this species. The images in this gallery are believed to be T. Sabahensis.

Since they are so closely related to the GSP, I would treat it as such. 40g/puffer, is how all those measurements in the Pufferpedia work out. You can also try a search on them here. There are a few folks keeping them that hang out here. I think Hilly is one of them.

I think hilly is keeping his in: low brackish (1.002-1.008 ish), no tank mates. If I recall correctly, hilly is the one that wrote the article, so the activity is from his own experience with his fish. 40g is really the minimum recommended tank size, going with a larger tank is better.

I have written an article on it, it's not been put up yet, but here you go: Currently he's at 1.004, has been for a long time and seems fine with it.

Neary all of that in there is based on my personal experience with mine. There is a member on here called TAN from greece that has them in higher salinity with Ceylon and GSP's and said he was fine so I added that in as I thought it was relevant. If I was gonna go for tankmates I think I would go for a slightly wider tank like a 15" wide tank and try some goby's of some sort but not the small ones. For multiple specimens I kind of like the idea of 3 in something like a 90 gallon. But these are just my personal thoughts.

The profile was just a broad generalised information, didnt want to overload it too much with info, it was more about posting the pics for ID than anything else.
