my snails have finally bred again

I have a 5gal tank set up on my kitchen counter dedicated to snails. Has a sponge filter and well *now* a heater. (Couldn't figure out how to not boil the water before, but I finally got right)

anyway they finally produced more snails. as I was changing their water last night I'm like OOOOH Perfect size for my puffs! Picked out two, no easy task, but I have small fingers, and the two guys just went crazy for them

So first whole snails since I got them. hehe up until now I had to crush the snails for them and they had to grind their teeth away stripping the meat from the shell.

do they breed without heaters? i've got 3 snails (2 species too...) in a big olive jar and a plant that likes cold water that the LFS ripped me off on. (grr). they've been there for like a month, and no snail children. is it the temperature? it's about 18 degrees celcius, and seldom wanders over 20, only on sunny days. and after all, it is chilly in an igloo

whoh dude. im from canada too and i dont live in no igloo...anyway, mine sit in a small betta tank. no heater no light and they make babies just fine. i feed them zuccini and after that they bred like crazy

Don't buy zuchini because I dont like it...lol I toss in some veggies that sorta have gone off but not to the point of growing fuzz And for the past little while no eggs pods have been hatching (I have a few artificial plants in there to hold the eggs so they aren't sucked up during water changes) I dropped a little 50 watt heater in there and the eggs are hatching like crazy. My water temp was sitting in the low 70's high 60's without a heater (despite this house being newly "renovated" it's pretty drafty...base housing gotta love it)

my boyfriend hates zuccini too he doesnt mind me feeding it to the animals haha! try carrots too! apperantly its a natural color enhancer for fish!

I use carrots, green beans, brussel sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower..

Anything that's gone slightly off that I can't use to make vegetable stock, goes in the snail tank

I would think the best breeding environment depends on the type of snails. I got 2 tiny ramshorn snails in a plant from the lfs and put them in a 5G tank with a corner filter and the plant and they grew up and made babies in about a month! The are not quite 1/2inch in diameter. There's no heater in the tank. My snails don't seem to need much!!

i dont no what mine are. my roomie brings them home for me (she works at a fish store) they are real small, like pond snails. anyway i finally watched my male DP eat one last night. he just sucked it right out of its shell...it was crazy. that snail didnt no what happend. quick death forsure
