New to the Puffer world and I love them!!

Hi all, I am a newb with 2 GSP's and they are so awesome.

I've kept fish for 25 yrs and this is my first time with Puffers.

Well the tank is all set up for them, it's only a 5 1/2 gal so far but they should be in a new and bigger home in a few weeks. I cheated and used the aragonite that's already seasoned from my African tank LOL got the power filter going, air stone and and proper salinity thanks to Instant Ocean.

One already downed a ghost shrimp already, they've eaten some live brine, some small NLS pellets and have consumed every tiny snail I stuck in there LOL

What little pigs, guess I will skip feeding them tomorrow!

Ok, it seems you have done the same thing as I have done less then a week ago for your puffs. I aswell temporarily have 2 in what I think to be a 5 and a half. I have 2 filtration systems running on the tank (internal and external) and it seems to be keeping up. But it doesn't even begin to stop me from the weekly water changes (done one so far even though they were not in there a week yet.) I would say that the best you could feed your puffs are what you are currently giving them, try to not give them a pellet or flake diet, it is not suitable for puffers. I only have ever used a pellet as a suppliment for puffs that were so use to pellet/staple foods until I was able to weane them onto a better diet.

Thanks, for the info. I am going to move them soon. I will be getting another tank this week and moving my other Africans so the Puffs can have a nice big new home.

I have purchased today some freeze dried krill. But I have my snails going in a container. I just don't know how many ghost shrimp they can tolerate each week.

If you have a lot of broken lines of sight in that small 5 and a half then you possibly could stock up 4 twice a week. Personally, I prefer small crays. I caught some wild and bred them and are using what I refer as the 'tank crays' as food and the 'wild crays' as the parents... My puffs go through about 1 each every other day... pigs

They got a nice treat of live black worms today. I will probably toss them a few small ghost shrimp the Women caught for me today in a day or two.

My Africans enjoyed some of those nasty black worms too.

Can someone explain to me what a "broken line of sight" is, I've seen it written numerous times and don't know what it means?

"Broken line(s) of sight" means that you can see into the tank from the front, but a fish - say in the right rear quarter - cannot see the left half of the tank at all. And so forth, visual barriers that the fish can swim around but that block direct sight lines within the tank - a sort of set of visual baffles for the fish, but not for the external observer.

Something I would recomend using would be drift wood/dead coral branches in brackish tanks or driftwood for freshwater.

And different sized fake plants--especially tall ones.
