10 Gallon Tank

I was wondering if any Puffer aside from Dwarf Puffers could fit into a 10 Gallon freshwater tank.

I'm under the impression that anything that could fit wouldn't get along with what's currently in the tank ( a Red Flame Guorami, an Otocinclus, and a medium sized ( 1 inch) tetra), but if there is anything, I'd like to know about it = ).

Nothing is really going to work with those tankmates unfortunately.

aside from the tank mates, is there anything aside from the DP's that will fit in there though?

Maybe a Fangs Puffer (Monotrete Cochinchinensis) if you can find one. They are mean little suckers, have a look in the video section, there's some good feeding ones.

A F8 might work with a lot of filtration and w/c but there brackish.

There are absolutely no puffers that will work in your tank. Now, if you decide to rehome those fish that are in there presently, we can talk.

I was considering rehousing the fish I currently have in there. I found a local pet store that said they would be willing to take the GSP I have now, and it sounded like they were willing to take pretty much any fish they had space for.

So with an empty 10 gallon, it looked like the DPs were the only thing listed that would really fit. The Fangs Puffer had a minimum 20 gallon tank and I'd hate to make him feel cramped = \.


By the way... I got some snails and ghost shrimp for the GSP today (since I can't get him to the pet store for a little while). He devoured the snails almost immediately, but he seems to be having some trouble catching the ghost shrimp. Is this normal, and he'll simply eventually catch on, or should I have gone for something smaller? (I would say he's just about 2 inches right now).

He'll catch em eventually. If you're putting the ghost shrimp straight in with the puffer you need to be careful doing this, they can be carrying harmful parasites that could infect the puffer. Same goes with snails.

Carinotetraodon irrubesco can do great in a 10-gallon with no tankmates. My avatar girl, Poofer, lives in a 10 with lots of plastic plants to hide in and sleep on.

Hmm I'll definitely keep that one in mind too.

It sounds like these minimum tank sizes are something that you can push a little bit, then?

Minimum tanks size are there to provide a good baseline for newcomers, they allow for a few more mistakes, they also give you rough idea of territory size to avoid problems with multiple specimens. If you push these and start to get problems then you have a baseline to return to.

I should probably stick to the KISS ( keep it simple, stupid) method then, and just try myself with DP's before I move to anything too difficult.

From what I was seeing, people group the DP's with otos generally. Do these two tend to get along fairly well?

DP's are great, and I have seen them kept w/ otos, but I always have trouble getting DP's to eat once I get them...then again they are only available at petsmart.
