Juwel Rio 180 - With Sump - DP tank - Progress Thread

Hello every one, I have been reading dwarfpuffers.com for some time now and just found this site and thought i would start posting here aswell.I have always wanted to setup a dp tank, i have had a juwel vision 180 setup for close to 2 years now with fancy goldfish init, I wanted to setup a small dp tank but instead i got a good deal on ebay on a juwel rio 180 in which i was going to setup a marine tank so i had a custom sump made and did some DIY on it, but money became an issue aswell as having time for a marine setup. The tank was sat in my livingroom for long enough untill i decided to go for a DP tank so over the past few weeks i have been working on my rio 180, and am waiting untill tuesday for two DP's for the tank. At the moment I have 2 Ottos and 3 BumbleBee Gobys that i have had in the tank for a few days now and have been fine, so its all good at the moment. I have added some photos of the tank i have taken today, comments and advice on the tank setup are very welcome


Shot of the tank from the side and the overflow box to the sump that currently has a filter sponge init because the chicken wire holes where large enough for the Gobys to swim into, will be fixing that problem soon, lol.

Not true. I interviewed a goby expert for the lowdown on this, a woman named Naomi Deventhal who has spent her life examining and understanding gobies, and they live in freshwater, but they are tolerant of both conditions. They come from even acidic water.

You can keep them in salty water or fresh, it doesn't bother them too much, and I found them to be a great combination with DPs.

I have BumbleBee Goby´s whit my sap´s also in a juwel rio 180. it is freshwater and my goby´s are doing fine, but i have herd that the like it in brackish water but can live in fresh..

Okey if i ask you how mutsh a juwel rio 180 cost where you bought it?

Got it from ebay for about 200 Pounds had the sump custom made for about 70 pounds and then did the modding myself

looks like a nice setup you got there. I kept 3 BBG's for over a year in fresh but one thing I can say is that when I switched over the tank to brackish it's like they are a different fish. They appear to be alot more happier being in the brackish setup now

You might think you know this, but it's not true. An aquarist absolutely cannot identify bumblebee gobies. Identifying species of Brachygobius requires microscopic examination of things like scale counts. The taxonomy of the genus is very confusing to the lay-person, and colour markings are of no value at all.

As Fella mentioned above, Brachygobius spp. are found in both fresh and brackish water. Brachygobius doriae for example is found in blackwater streams alongside things like rasboras and Carinotetraodon irrubesco.

This isn't to say Brachygobius spp. don't do well in brackish water, they do. Frank Schaefer suggests the advantage in the long term might be you can keep them well fed, by stocking their enclosure with live brine shrimps and letting them feed freely. Certainly, I agree that most Brachygobius die from starvation rather than water chemistry issues.

So i got 4 DP's in the tank now and they are doing great, eating well and hunting all the time, they dont come to me yet for food. Just looking at the photos i posted i cannot get over how fast my plants have grown its insane, i will post pics soon

Here is my first update of my tank, I now have 12 DP's and they are all doing very well, and on top of that i have 4 cherry shrimps that are doing great in there and i got my BumbleBee Gobys to breed, the male is currently garding the eggs day and night.



Will have some better photos soon enjoy.

How deep is the substrate? What substrate are you using?

Minimum, you need about 8 cm of substrate for good (any) plant growth (assuming your species have roots!). I use a mix of pond soil at the bottom, and then gravel/sand on top. The reason I ask is that you have a similar tank to mine, but the substrate on mine comes well above the plastic trim around the bottom of the tank.

I have maybe only 1 inch, i am running CO2 ans adding fertilizer very 2 weeks, when i gravel vac I am only doing a reall indepth one ever 3 weeks or so, but once a week while doing water changes i am doing a lite on just over the surface to pick up all the stuff that id covering the gravel. My plants are growing so well for my first planted tank i am so happy with it
