question on F8's Behavior
I have noticed lately that my F8's like to swim up and down the glass, to me this is a sign of boredom in fish and not cuteness. What I am wondering is what can I do to make them not bored? Should there be more plants in there? The tank is about 1/3 full of plants right now and there are a couple of caves in there too. The water parameters are all normall with a SG of 1.006. Any suggestions on how to cure their apparent boredom would be greatly appreciated as their activity of going up and down bothers me somewhat. Oh and they get fed bloodworms every night, they get snails about 3 times a week and I also feed them clam and krilll. The days they get clam and krill I usually don't give them the bloodworms at night. I don't think their diet has much to do with their apparent boredom cause as you can see I feed them a well balanced diet IMO. Funny, kinda like a dog they look like they just want something to play with

More plants will help without a doubt.

If you've got some quite tall fake plants, try masking the sides of the tank with them so there isn't a direct line for them to pace up and down.

could them seeing their reflection be part of this? They don't do it constantly or anything just once in awhile. Do you mean masking them to the inside out the outside of the tank?

Re: question on F8's Behavior
it could be reflection, I did it mainly to stop them thinking there's more open water than what they think there is and to try and get them to establish a territory withing the boundary of the planted edges.

One could try rearranging the decorations and plants in the tank...make them think they are some where new.
One thing...it comes off as an odd question..but does he/she only pace when you are in the room ...and usually at the front of the tanks or the sides? Try being out of the room for a time (hr or so), and peak in to see what he is doing. It may just be he is trying to get your attention, like a dog begging for food.

All puffers, all intelligent fish for that matter, will pace at least once in a while. They can tell something exists beyond the veil, and will try to check it out now and then, despite past failure or totally interesting surroundings.
No matter how magnificent your successes or devastating your failures, the worlds' approximately 5 billion impoverished people could not possibly care less.

You make a good point there cause the one thing I have noticed is they act like a couple of dogs which I find totally cute. I am beginning to think that it is just what they do and I should have nothing to worry about. I will try to not look at the tank and sneak up on them and see what they are up too. I do know that as soon as I open the lid they come right up to the surface like a couple of dogs looking for food, and it's like they are wagging their tails. These two have made me totally fall in love with puffers in general, I have never come across a species of fish with so much personality, and so can't wait to get my big tank built for a Fahaka.

Re: question on F8's Behavior
It's really fun watching them when they don't see us. Exploring the tank and scouring the bottom to see if they missed any food. Our puffers are at the surface as soon as they see us. They'll shoot up to the top and way their tails and smoosh their faces against the glass. There are patched where there is no algae, because our puffs rubbed it off. Sometimes, they'll jump out of the water and splash down just to get our attention.
