Difference between GSP and greens?

Post by connorspuffer »

My LFS hve some lovely 4" puffers in. hey say theyre Green Puffers (tetradon schoutendi) and i agree looking at pictures in their 'holy grail of fish' book.
I have kept brackish puffers before and currently have a Figure 8. Im thinking about shutting down my FW community tank for one of these beauties (had one but it died).
Now, the only thing i can say to yout o help identify it is it had patches rather that spots in pics on the net that GSPs have.
If i fail to identify it, do they both require high ende brackish or do Greens need slightly lower SG (like ive read on the net)?
Cheers

Look through our Pufferpedia here:

http://www.thepufferforum.com/PufferPedia

and see if you can figure out the species. If I remember correctly, schoutendi are not found in the common trade and are extremely rare, its more likely to be a Ceylon, GSP or possibly a sabhenisis (I spelled that one wrong), which have been showing up in the trade quite often.

Definetly not a ceylon! Its not in the pufferpedia, already checked. Is there any links to any Green Puffer info?

Okay, the second picture on that page is either a GSP showing stressed colors (or some just naturally have blotchy colors) or it could be the sab.. there's some discussion going on about the sab's, they are kinda-sorta believed to be a close relative or color morph of GSP's, but they have a different build to the face and eyes.. smaller eyes IMO.

Then again, I'm not a species expert but everything on the first 3 lines of that page (other than the Figure 8 or ceylon in the top row) is a GSP or possibly a sab... Let me see if I can find one of the discussions about the sab's going on for you so you can look at some of those photos.

Well, that's hard. If you can get a photo, there's likely people on here who can give you a positive ID. Then you'd know.

Otherwise, you'd have to play around with levels and see which one the fish seems the most comfortable at. The biggest thing would be making sure its not some species that gets to a foot long or anything!

Easiest way to differenciate the schoutendi form other similar species are the VISIBLE spines on it's belly.

I have not seen any obvious spines on the belly of schoutedeni to be honest, but the schoutedeni is really mottled at the back and hard to confuse with the GSP.
May I ask, where is the spine information from?

Have a look at the aqualog for proper differentiation. Most schoutedeni pictures from other sources are plain wrong (just GSPs), but the one at fishbase is right!

http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/species ... choutedeni

The whozoo page is filled with errors by the way.
