Hello Again,

I read through the information provided by PufferPunk at the top of the page but still have a few questions. I have been really bad about feeding my puffer healthy, I only feed him silversides, krill, and salad shrimp occasionally. Tonight I fed him a cooked green bean and he loved it. I was going to begin trying to feed him freshwater snails but his beak is fine, I have had him for a year now and he loves to trim it by biting the Live Rock. Any suggestions on other foods to feed Huey? I was thinking about trying those algae sheets that you can put on a little feeding clip. Oh and its a large stars and stripes puffer if that helps any.

Clams, oysters, crab legs, are all naturals foods for him.

Ok so I went to a local Kroger's and I was having trouble deciding on what sea food to buy for my Puffer. I picked up some cooked crab legs but the guy working told me to stay away from them because of what they were cooked in ? He said it might not be safe for my Puffer? I also was going to buy some shrimp with the tail on that were in bags pre cooked but they contained Iodine (salt but not the salt in the ocean)... How do you all feed your puffer ? Do you feed them raw crab/shrimp or cooked? Also I picked up a clam but Had a question about how to feed him it, besides cracking the shell and letting it sit in saltwater to let wastes out should I cook it or anything?

Thanks alot and sorry for the silly questions.. just trying to get my puffer to eat healthier. He loves Green Beans, i fed him a few of those yesterday along with tiny salad sized shrimp and silversides.

Cooked food is less nutritious. Raw is better. Shells and tails still on and with squid - intact, non-gutted are better. With the clams, depending on the size of the clams and the puffers' mouth, cracking may be necessary. Do not let the clam stay in the tank longer than an hour as it will start to decompose/grow bacteria. I would not recommend buying any food that has added flavorings, vitamins and minerals as this may not be the correct dosing for the fish.

I also freeze everything & thaw in warm vitamin water. For clams, etc, I crack open large enough for the puffer to get their face in, so they can use their teeth (scraping against the inside of the shell) to work the meat out.

I thaw frozen food in cool water as warm/hot water can break down vitamins and decrease nutritional values.

My puffer likes to be eat large silver sides and krill generally avoids smaller foods. Should I force him to eat things like brine shrimp?

Brine shrimp isnt a great food and if its a larger puffer small foods can be ignored. Try Mussels and Cockles and shrimp.
