Re: New Tank
My aquaclear has not been removed when my brackish tank reached salt water, simply positioned with it's intake under the LR to move water through it and had it's media replaced with Purigen and small chunks of live rock.
No matter how magnificent your successes or devastating your failures, the worlds' approximately 5 billion impoverished people could not possibly care less.

Re: New Tank
Java fern will grow onto holey rock, if you tie it to the rock for a month or so.
You are getting sleepy... you only hear the sound of my voice... you must do water changes... water changes... water changes... water changes...

Re: New Tank
Will java fern and java moss grow in brackish water? Or should I let it grow in my freshwater tank and then transfer it to my brackish one?
Went and looked at tanks today, I can get everything I need for $78 (yay for my mom letting me have everything 50% off)

Re: New Tank
wow. My mom ended up just giving me most of the stuff, which was nice. I decided to go with sand, so at the moment I'm just waiting for the sand to settle.
I couldn't find bio-spira anywhere. The one place that did carry it said they stopped carrying it because two seperate people bought it from him and their entire tank ended up dieing (the guy was really nice though, I guess he replaced every fish in both tanks). He carries something called "Stability" now, he said he used it for all his tanks and that it works fine for him. It isn't refridgerated, but it was only $10, so I figured I'd try it and see what results I got. (It's times like these I wish I had a microscope.)

Re: New Tank
Stability is crap. Anything other than Biospira will only add dead bacteria to your tank.

Re: New Tank
Stability worked fine for me. When I first added water my nitrates and nitrites were all over the place. I added Stability and two days later everything was perfect. I wasn't really expecting results from it, so I'm a little surprised. Rizz moved in to his new tank today and he's doing great. He was a little stressed at first but settled down very quickly and now he's busy exploring. I've been testing the water every few hours and so far no change in anything. Rizz is a very happy little puffer at the moment and he's loving his new home.
Re: New Tank
Keep an eye on those parameters over the next few weeks, and prepare for water changes.

Re: New Tank
I bought tons of extra test strips and I'm checking everything about every 3 hours. Everything is still fine, Rizz is still swimming around happily exploring, I fed him a few min. ago and he's eating great (as always, lol)

Re: New Tank
Test strips are not nearly as accurate as the liquid test kits.

Re: New Tank
I know. It's all I could get. I ordered a liquid test kit online, I'm still waiting for it to get here. :/
My Nitrite went slightly up, it's at .5 right now. I just finished doing a 30% water change. I plan on doing another one later just to keep it down.

Re: New Tank
If I were you, I would be trying to find some bio-spira. Your salt bill is going to be through the roof if you're doing 2 x 30% water changes a day. Not to mention all the strain on your back from lifting buckets..zombiefetus wrote:I know. It's all I could get. I ordered a liquid test kit online, I'm still waiting for it to get here. :/

Re: New Tank
I'm not worried about salt. I get massive boxes of Instant Ocean for like $5.
So far so good though. Rizz is still his happy little self. Hopefully my clams will get here today. I ordered a dozen, they should be here today, but I've been having bad luck with UPS lately :/ I might go get him another crab or a ghost shrimp today.
