No problem, the mats are totally waterproof. They are made of plastic with thermal strips running through (approx 3/4 mm thick). They are designed to be placed underneath the base of the tank (hence mat!).

EHEIM make a SW and FW version of the 'Thermo Filter'. It heats the water outside of the tank so there is no need for unsightly internal devices. It is also a very robust and well designed canister filter, typical of reliable German engineering.

The mangrove roots are thick branches arranged in a 'root-like' manner! I would be very worried if they started growing through the glass!
