Re: what if.....

For whats its worth, when I got started in this hobby I had no inkling how much it would eventually add up to for upkeep and maintenance to do the time I have invested justice (for lack on a better word coming to mind) My aquarium keeping gives me a an odd satisfaction that is totally worth the pric...

When I lived in NC I used to see DPs sometimes at the petsmart in Jacksonville.

Re: filter recommendation

I have had positive experience with my Rena Filstar canister filter. Its been hassle free, effective and it was even reasonably priced. Now in my experience at least most the time w/ aquariums when I try to cut costs it comes back to bite me in the arse later, but this purchase definitely hasn't. Mi...

Re: Juvenile fahaka

woops  sorry PP I took a call between hitting reply and submit and didn't see your post ahead of mine, it wasn't my intention to offer contradicting advice. When it comes to fahakas and tank mates all I know about is what doesn't work so I figured I couldn't shoot down the idea altogether, ...

Re: Juvenile fahaka

He seemed to suggest conditioning is the key with puffers and tankmates, as it is with pit bulls. That is, if you feed the puffer live objects, which he needs to pursue and kill, this will likely cause him to eventually view his tankmates as food. However, if you feed him frozen items, at a particu...

Re: Fahaka +pleco

My fahaka killed a pleco that was twice its size at the time, didnt try to eat it or anything, just killed it. I have lots of plants and driftwood but it seems like anything that moves has to die. The only consolation to my fish being such a singleton is the surprising jolly disposition towards peop...

Re: New Fahaka. Need Help!

I would say the water quality is what you should be watching for signs to upgrade , not the fish. I think if you are diligent in testing your water that's really where the most important signs are that you need a bigger tank. While I think all of the parameters are important the one you need to focu...

Re: Fahaka Pricing?

If things with your hundred gallon are just feeling a little stale and you are into trying different ways to liven things up, I gotta tell you going for a planted tank with a big ole tank really keeps me entertained and I totally recommend it. It adds more interest for me because my aquascape is alw...

Re: Fahaka puffer and friends!

When my fahaka was little he did something like this. Somehow endler fry hitch hiked into the big tank in drfitwood or plants or netted shrimps. He killed 2 of them and left one. I tried to net it, but in a planted 150 a fish thats basically a eyeball with scales, it was an exercise in futility. I w...

Re: Slow Growth?

In a tank that size... water changes, water changes, water changes. To keep your fish healthy and try to keep him growing to any potential your nitrates need to be kept a less than 10ppm. It is the best most important thing you are going to be able to do for your fish until it gets that bigger space...

Re: fahaka in a planted tank?

Sorry to reply so late, but I felt bad to see you discouraged so figured I'll add what I can. I have a fahaka in a planted tank. I decided that plants are my favorite part of freshwater and I just couldn't stand it. It is a pain in the arse sometimes, I have to feed just before and have a spotter on...

Re: Is there such a thing as a kind fahaka?

Two pleco's were first in the tank, one on purpose (the really big guy), the other I wasn't aware of until I found him dead, I'm assuming he got moved in when I started stealing driftwood from other tanks to fill up my aqua scape. Even though all my fahakas burying made me give up my dream of having...

Re: Is there such a thing as a kind fahaka?

Mine is just over a year old now and right at a foot long. It buries when it feels like it, there is no particular lighting scenario that triggers it more or less. I use a combination of eco complete and flourite. I tried to house my fish with MANY types of tank mates starting when my fish was 2 inc...

I apologize for the traumatic nature of this link in advance. My little sis called me over to her comp and had this up, it was something I thought you all might be intrigued to see. Kinda "oh my gosh!" but cool to see natural habitat moments.otters are mean to mbu irl
