I saw this online picture of this fish:

It looks like a porcupine puffer but the spots are wayyyyyy better.... I like the markings on this puffer!!

Looks like a porc, probably a regional variant with darker markings. Nice.

One of numerous species of Porcs or Burrfish.
Lovely little fish. Not reef-safe.
Probably nocturnal (eye-size).

are there any species or porcs of burr fish that dont get monstrously big ???

Am not aware of any frequently seen and significantly smaller than one foot.

thanks ! -- yeah i was just looking for something around or under one foot -- ive seen a couple of the really big (19"+) in person and they are HUGE --- too big for me to ever consider keeping

Mike, Chilomycterus schoepfii doesn't get that massive, about 12". Here are some links for you to check out.

Yeah, both Myaj and I have C. Shoepffi. They look very cool because their spines are always out, not flat against the body like the Porc's are. Once you get one dewormed and used to accepting dead foods they have all of the personality of the Porc, just in a smaller package.

To prove their personalities- Just yesterday I was feeding mine some cut up shrimp pieces, and after I had figured he was full I went to adjust my skimmer (which entails leaning over the tank a bit) and he spit water up at me! It was as if to say,
"Hey! Quit holding out on me and give me the rest of that shrimp!"

I love my little guy; he's got some spunk!

thats awesome! --- sounds like the porcupineish fish for me --- do you guys keep them with any other fish ??? or is it too risky?

C. schoepfii have been known to starve to death because they won't accept food. But lately, we've been 2 for 2 with both myaj and oralacerta's puffs.

Mine is still in quarentine while I try to get organized and free up the 75 for her. But no, I don't think I'll be keeping any other fish with her, those teeth are scary and the store was feeding her live feeders so she associates live fish with dinner time.

My girl was just loaded up with parasites. I've done two rounds of deworming and she's definately growing and gaining weight now, but I'm still not satisfied.

I'm keeping mine in with a 3 1/2" Tomato Clown which is rather annoying during feeding time (sometimes hijacks a morsel or two) but the puffer tolerates him and they swim together. I also had a Yellow Tailed Blue Damsel of about 1" in the tank which also was completely tolerated, but he died from what I think was starvation (I wasn't feeding flake for him or the Clown expecting them both to get puffer scraps). The Puffer seems to do better with a tank mate as he tends to scare easily when something (or someone) new enters the room, and the braver Clown helps him get over his skittishness faster. He puffs very frequently- once a week or so- but it shows how observant he is of his surroundings and how used to his 'regular' people he is.

I'd definitely be cautious with one that was trained to eat live feeders though... That's too bad. I'm glad she's improving in health; I'm going to try and get some pics of my guy up so you can compare your progress with the IPs with mine; I'm just so frustrated with how terrible my camera has been.
