The Puffer Forum

Has anybody heard of these? A guy on a local forum has one and says it "destroys large oscars." I couldn't find much info searching. He says it's a Eliotris Picta, but another picture I found that looks identical is an Eleotris vittata, which fishbase lists as a brackish fish.

Just curious as I had never heard of them/seen them.

looks kinda like a manatee. Maybe the small, not-warm-blooded, skunk striped type...

I was sold by a shop that it was some kind of goby...HA...well it was far from that I had to feed it at first feeder guppies then moved on to small to med sized feeder goldfish. The thing would just dig itself into the substrate with only its eyes and a bit of the mouth showing. It looked mean as heck and I think with the proper substrate would have blended in perfectly (I had blue rocks don’t ask why) but it did help me to find it. The only time I knew it was active was right when I was going to bed because that is when it liked to hunt the goldfish. I remember I was almost asleep than BAM!!!! One less goldfish, hardy little bugger jumped out of tank one night hit the floor and flopped under the stand before I could run and grab him. Once back in the tank he just went back to his mean looking self. He grew from about 3” to about 5” before I had to give him back to the LFS. Forgot about him for awhile but did know he was sold to some guy that wanted to put him in some big tank……About 2 years later I was at the store and looked in one of the large tanks and boom there he was only this time pushing about a foot long and still mean looking. In all not a friendly fish but a good learning experience.

They're large predatory sleeper gobies. Don't move around a whole lot, but look quite neat. I think that they would do well in either brackish or freshwater, but if you want a smaller alternative, check out the Jade goby, Dormitator sp. I have one, and he's a very neat fish.
