SG FOR LIVE ROCK???

What is the lowest sg I have to reach in my Ceylon's tank before I can put some live rock in?? and never having had live rock before...does it just look after itself or are there any specific rules you have to stick by?? My tank is 1.007 at the moment

I've heard of people keeping it at 1.020, but personally I wouldn't keep it below 1.022.

Are you wanting it for decor or biological filtration or what?
If its decor, just get some base rock and later on add a few pieces of live rock to "seed" it. It will already be alive bacterially, but if you want the little bugs and coraline algae, etc, you'll have to bring in some "real" live rock.
If its for the biological reasons, then I'd wait until you are full marine.

Okay...cool thanks. I thought it had to be full marine. I am going to have to go full marine eventually with my Ceylon so I will wait until then

I had a piece in my tank at 1.019, and it seemed alright, I think any lower than that would result in lots of die-off.

Would nitrate reducing bacteria still be present in rock at lower SG's?

Depends on what "lower" means. Certainly not in large numbers.

So I should be looking at raising the sg to at least 1.022....correct??

I'd say, 1.020 should work.

Skimmer is key, removes lots of metabolic wastes, hormones, etc, that would take forever to degrade into something the live rock could easily deal with. Their equally important pieces of the water quality picture, the skimmer removes certain organic wastes immediately(it will remove nearly any polarized molecule, not just proteins) while the live rock(or a DSB) cleans up the end metabolic products.
