Hello everyone. We just bought a Green Spoted puffer. He or she is about 4 inches long. Right now I have it in SG of 1.05~. I need to buy a spectrometer!!!

Anyway, should this puffer be in a full marine environment at this size? If so, how fast or slow should we be raising the SG?

We are in the process of setting up a 40 Gal hex tank for it, the puffer is being temporarily housed in a 14 gal tank. Will the 40 gal be big enough just for the GSP? We have no plans of putting anything else in there.

We have many more questions but this will be good for starters, we look forward to your responses.

Welcome! I moved this to brackish, as that's how we classify GSPs.

The SG should be raised no more than .002 per week. Hydrometers and refractometers are what measures the salinity. Hydrometers are cheaper but you can get pretty inexpensive refractometers on Ebay and most of us find them easier to use and more accurate.

Please read the GSP article in our library by PufferPunk, that should most of the information you need, including recommended SG for size. Feel free to ask anything else though.

Yes, the 40g will be good for one GSP.

Very nice info about the puffers in the library. I was looking at the pictures of GSP's and wondered if our puffer was in fact a GSP so I am posting a couple of pics for your opinions. Sorry about the quality, the lighting in the temp. tank is not so good.

Sure looks like one.

Most GSP pictures are cute little guys, under 3", they look more like your GSP as they get more mature, taking on the more football like body shape and finer patterning. Shakespeare is almost exactly 3" now and is in-between in appearance.

I'm sceptical.

Where in the world are you. Was this fish in 1.005 in the shop when you picked him up. When you get him in his better tank with better lighting could you please get pics of his tail and rear section?

so what is the difference btwn. a full grown adult gsp and sabahensis?

Why is it the several people who have managed to find sabahensis have large, near full grown specimens?

Are the juveniles indistinguishable from GSPs?

If the above link is a 4" GSP, it's a dramatic transformation in the next 2" to make it into a Sabahensis. Thats not to say it's not possible and it goes through a mental transformation.

1.05 or 1.005?
I really hope it's 1.005...

Because my husband mistakenly thought that light brackish was 1.05 and killed our GSP..full marine is 1.02 or something like that..

PA's gsp Fugu looks much closer to the puffer here, not sure his size though. The spotting is the thing, but I have seen young gsps with spots that run together like that at the LFS, well, at least, I thought they were gsps, I suppose they could have been young sabahensis. I may have to pay a bit of attention next time petland gets a batch in.

Sorry about original post the SG is 1.005. I have a more exact measurement of the GSP = 4.5"
