I tried experimenting with BW plants in my 24 gallon nanocube. You can see some pictures in my gallery or it. I ordered plants from
http://www.aquariumplants.com/Brackish_ ... s_s/22.htm
and they were really great. All the plants were extremely healthy, until I got a hold of them

and put them in my tank. Also I had asked for the free snails offered by the site and I guess they were out so they gave me an extra onion plants in addition to the one I ordered. I started my tank at freshwater with the plants and slowly moved up towards 1.005 over about a month and a half. Some lived, some died.
I ordered:
-Half-sqr foot of micro sword, bad idea for my tank, it came like a huge sod of grass with great roots grown through some kind of netting, looked nice but I had no where to put it and after I tried to take the roots out of the netting and remove all of the vermiculite balls the roots wouldn't hold and it was a disaster for me.
Bunch of Bacopa, came in really nice but most of it has disintegrated.
-Two onion plants, one was huge and is doing really well, the other one I tried to plant it so that it would grow through a large hole in my lava rock and I think that is what killed it.
-Tons of java moss which is doing really well
-Aponogeton came in nice but has since completely died.
-Tiger lotus came as a bulb and now grows unbelievably fast and sends out shoots about once a week up to the surface where a floating leaf will grow.
I also ordered a java fern off of ebay and it is doing really well.
I also bought some of those bulbs they set at Petco, one happened to be an onion plant and has really grown nicely, others haven't grown at all and some completely rotted. It is hit or miss.
These are just my experiences, it doesn't mean it will work for you or what has failed for me won't work for you. Definitely get some liquid ferts though, that should really help.
