I just bought some beautiful but unfortunately covered in white spot, Red Eyed Puffers.
I bought a group of 6, three are male irrubesco's, and 2 are the irrubesco females however I think one might be a borneensis?

They are in a 60l fully/densely planted aquarium with peat/sand gravel topped substraight and slow moving water, ph is 7. lowered by the peat.

The tanks been set up for about 6 months and is filtered by a trickle filter in the hood has quite a slow turnover.

I have a couple of questions:

Firstly their eyes are actually blue with red rings around, could this be a reaction from the white spot and increased body mucus from the irritation (I have already innate treatment).

Plus how is best to start them breeding, I have two other tanks I was going to pair them into once the whitespot had gone, they totally covered, but eating like pigs!

Why would you buy a fish and more in particular a puffer fish when it has whitespot?

Because I always found white spot very easy to cure and leaving them in the shop would mean their deaths.

Plus I have wanted a Puffer breeding project for a while and had my eye's on red eyes.

If you were after a particular species would white spot put you off, knowing how easy it can be to remedy. I have kept fish for over 17 years and never come across a strain I could not get rid of.

With puffers , yes I would leave my wallet in my pocket. With any fish for that matter. I would not intentially buy any fish witha disease.
I have treated fish many years ago with whitespot and had success.
I have treated a few puffers in the past for whitespot but without success.
I wish you the best but I would have left them there. Irrubesco's are easy to come by and I would have waited for a healthy batch particularily if you have breeding ideas.

I would advise against using meds.

I have not seen the these puffer in my LFS's for a long while. They tend to have just GSP and figure 8's.

I just happy to give them a nice home and make them all better.

Hopefully once healthy and unstressed they will breed for me.

Be careful. This species from experience can just suddenly turn. They become aggressive and kill everything in site.

White spot all gone!

I have 3 boys and 3 girls all irrubesco's.

They are settled in well and have a couple of plants each as their homes. been digging pits at the bottom of plants, I have seen cichlids do this but not puffers.

They stuffing themselves on bloodworm and very happy in my jungle tank, although I cannot see them till it's feeding time, when they all swim at the front glass trying to get my attention. They are so good at hiding!!

There has been no aggression yet...YET, but I am keeping a eye open and have tanks on stand by.
