The Puffer Forum

I set up an old 20gal today and just came home with a filter ready to start cycling (too cheap to buy Bio-Spira ). About 20 minutes later my girlfriend and daughter came over with... Bio-Spira, way too much frozen blood worms, and a 1" Fig8! I've been talking to her about my puffer plans last couple weeks. Another B-day present for me I guess. It looks to be in good shape with a round belly and bright gold markings.

I plan on leaving the tank FW for 2-3 weeks so the Bio-Spira can establish. I tried to get a couple pictures, but it's just mass blurs. Will try again tomorrow.

Wow, I usually will ream the giver of a fish as a present but who can argue w/someone that adds Bio-Spira to the gift! Good choice, on her part.

I just fed the little puff for the first time today and have a question. I gave about a dime sized chunk of frozen blood worms. I noticed he kind of chews on 1 for a while and then spits out what looks like the blood worms' skin/casing (whatever its called ). Is this why blood worms are considered messy to feed puffers, because other than that it was very clean feeding?

Yup, they'll even squirt them out of their gills. You should defrost those worms 1st though. Frozen food isn't good to give your puffer & the "juice" that comes off of that block can add nitrates to your tank. Drain them thru a brine shrimp net.

I defrosted in a small cup of tank water, but it was initially a dime sized chunk. I did just dump the cup in though (better strain next time). Just about the Right amount judging by his bulge.

I'm horrible at holding a camera steady, so don't expect anything nice.



This aquarium is well over 10 years old along with the cave, gravel, and 2 of the plastic plants. I added some more plastic today. Plan on changing the substrate and the decor soon.



That would be my puffer right after his feed (belly about right?). Believe it or not he isn't blurry in person and looks very nice. Sorry best I could do.

I'm surprised you could even make him out. It has the best coloring I've seen in the past 2 months of looking at them. The gold markings on him are very reflective.

Age does matter when the glass is scratched and the hood is broken (with incandescent lights ). It will work for now though.

Seems to like the little forest on the left side of the tank, but won't touch the cave.
