I had a tank all lined up for me to purchase, and I was going to go inspect it today/bring it home, but the sellers (the tank is used) are getting awfully shady (not giving me their home phone, an exact address, quoting the tank size as a 55 and then as a 65, etc...). Anyhoo, I was going to bring home the Hawaiian Spotted Toby I've been eyeing for several weeks and QT him in a 20 gallon long and my hubby and I would set up the big tank for him. Well, even the puffer seemed to fall through today because the LFS that claimed to have Marine Biospira did, but it was on the shelf unrefrigerated.

You can imagine the look on my face after I saw that!

All of this got me thinking even more about the set-up I want if I manage to get this fabled marine tank set up. I really want to try a sharpnosed puff and a GSP together. Anyone have any experience mixing the two long-term? Short term? At all?

If you got 2 mild mannered puffers, it might work. I think 55 gallon would be too small. My Pink Spot runs from nassarius snails, so don't believe that every sharpnose is mean.

Well, the tank turns out to be a 65 gallon, though I may not buy it because the seller is giving me the run around. I bought the Hawaiian Spotted today, and he's quite interactive. I'm glad to hear your Toby is a softy; we'll see with time what kind of temperament mine has.

Did u get a Pink Spot or a Blue Spot? The only thing that he's ever bothered is a red scarlet hermit crab that switched shells to a margarita snail shell, I'm sure he was thinking the same thing as I was, "what the heck?"

I'm not familiar with many of the common names for Tobies; they are often confusing so I prefer scientific names. The common name for mine is Hawaiian Spotted Puffer, which includes 3 separate puffers that look quite similar. Mine is a Canthigaster jactator. Are you still considering mixing a GSP and a tobie?

I would try to make sure that they are the same size. The only case of that being tried that i've heard of ended badly...

I ended up buying a new 75 gallon tank because those people selling on craigslist seemed way too shady... The 75 is so much nicer as well. I was only going for the used tank because I thought the hubby didn't want me spending money on a new tank, let alone one so 'large'.

I'm not planning on mixing the two species anymore. Observing my Hawaiian Spotted feed, chase after my fingers when I'm cleaning the tank, and just how boisterous the little guy is... yeah, I think the GSP would have a rough time with him!

I'm trying to upgrade to a 75g with a sump and everything...Mostly because a larger SW tank is going to be even easier to maintain then my 55g. I'm starting fulltime college soon so i'm gonna need all the time I can get.
