Picked him up today and he's in, he's got the a*se on with me at the moment though so getting a picture where you can see him is tricky.

In the meantime though, here's what his tank is looking like.



I'll add some pics of him when he's feeling a little more photogenic. Even a bribe of 2 prawns wasn't enough to get him to come out for the camera.

i like your tank mate, the rocks go well with the sand,
is it newly made, will the water clear? mine took a couple days.

what puffer have you got? if the two prawns failed then i doubt he'll come out lol, unless he wants to, but by the sounds of it, he is actualy a she (i'll get my coat)

The cloudiness should subside, the aragonite sand doesnt seem to want to settle down and has also left a lovely scum around the edge of the tank.

Puffer species is currently unknown for certain. But at 6" he's doing a damn good job of avoiding me.

Cycling and water parameters are in shape I guess.

Maybe his hiding is bad for taking pictures, but it is probably good for reducing stress. I guess he feels better if not all eyes are on him introduced to a completely new home.

The tank looks good Hilly, not bad for a quick setup!

Can't wait to see photos of the big guy, maybe after dark with all the room lights out he'll come out and explore.

SG is spot on to what they said he was in the shop, I acclimated him very slowly (about an hour to the tank water as standard tap Ph around here is between 7 and 7.5 and because of the arogonite it's closer to 8 in there. Filter was fully cycled on the Oscar tank so there is a slight risk that some of the SG will kill off some of the bacteria, I will be doing some daily water changes daily for the next week or so just in case.

25kg of Ocean rock just did me nicely I think. I may get a few more tall plants yet but I like the contrast of the light rock against the plants against the black background.

I am hoping it is nothing more than him just getting used to his new surroundings. If he dies I will only have myself to blame and I will have failed him. He is currently perched on a piece of ocean rock hiding behind some plants.... He's seems to be looking out at what is going off around him.

Hope he has a long and happy life > 20 years. Even in case you should not blame yourself. I think there is nothing more you can do to provide him a good home.

Maybe someone who successfully keeps or kept a similar guy will contribute to this thread?

Seems like a nice home for a puffer. I'm sure he will like being El Hefe of the tank.

So the person/shop you got it from did not know the species, but just knew it was a brackish puffer? Most commonly traded 6" brackish puffers would be Ceylon or GSP from what I've read.

You are correct in your assumption, however this one is still currently a mystery of its exact species.

I've managed to take a couple of shots, he's slowly coming round. Although I have Ammonia issues and slight traces of Nitrites. So it looks like im in for a week or 2 of daily water changes.

Don't worry about the white film you can see on top of him, the sides of the tank are covered in it from the sand, he's slowly running it off as he becomes more active. Also can you see the eyespot under the top fin.





Eyespot on the other side as well.

I've got a lot of work to do yet mate, i'll be happier once the tank paramters have gone back to normal. He still has a good appetite though, he cracks cockles like they're nothing to him.

And he has a monster set of teeth in that mouth.

this is a very uneducated guess, could he be a funnierly colour ceylon puffer?
i only say this due to the eye spots just below his fin
