Contamination From Live Shrimp?????

I really want to feed my Puffer some live Ghost Shrimp but have seen on other posts about quarantining them before they are fed to the Puffer. I have no quarantine tank.Do you think it would be too risky(due to possible disease) to just put them straight in with my Puff from the LFS???

A lot of people advocate the use of a quarantine tank but I don't bother with shrimp ( I sit and wait to be berated for this
). My LFS stock them in a large tank, well large for shrimps and quarantine them in store for a week. Its up to you really, if the water they are in looks dodgy and you don't trust your LFS then I would quarantine them. However a small tank wont cost a lot and you could probably just use a covered bucket sat on a heat mat instead of forking out for another tank

I was somewhat under the impression that parasites won't pass between shrimp and fish.. but the water they came from the store very well could have nasties in it.
Just use a bucket and an airstone, better safe than sorry and this way you can gut load them as well.

Yes, well my LFS too has them in a very large tank that's VERY clean and well looked after...... so I think I may buy some tonight on my way home from work....are they very expensive do you know??

The ones I get from Maindenhead Aquatics are 10p each. I just bought 30 and have them in an 18" tank in the garage. No heater, just a little filter to keep the water clean and moving and a little salt as recommended by the shop.

Parasites can pass from shrimp to fish, including ich I believe. Which is why QTing is highly recommended. Personal choice of course but I won't feed anything to my fish that I'm not sure is completely safe.

Most of the common parasites which infect fish cannot and will not infect crustaceans, and vice versa. Fine, but the water (as already stated earlier) can easily transport infectious agents if there is any cross contamination in the shop (my LFS has Ghost shrimp on one of its central systems) or by shared nets, catch buckets, etc. I QT everything alive, period.
Additionally, I have seen some nasty ecoparasites on feeder shrimp. They may be no hazard to my fish, but I do want them in my system. Part of QT/isolation is observation.So is gut-loading of all live feeder criters - that is non-trivial also. Feeders in pet shops are rarely well nourished. You can correct that with holding and care.

i've only seen nice shrimp for about £5 each!
are these just feeder shrimp?

I cannot for the life of me find anything other than a simple ghost shrimp for any less than £3 each.
What shrimp are these mate?

They are river shrimp as far as I know but farm produced. I guess I am quite lucky!!! I can ask the LFS what exactly they are as I am very intrigued now

I actually have put a video up of Clooney eating them though the qulity is a bit poor due to photobuckets condensing. However I do have some pics on my camera that I will put on PC tonight and try and get a few pics up for you
