The Abei seems to have developed an infection. He has always had a ray on his right pectoral fin that has been damaged since I bought him and today it seems this ray has become inflamed. Shots are a little dark but it didn't show up with the flash. You can see the white blotch on his fin.



Is it just infected or could it be the beginning of something more sinister. I've already given him a dose of Melafix and i'm thinking of doing the same thing as I did last time he was injured of a daily water change and a dose of melafix every other day.

Any other suggestions or is this the right course.

Water parameters are what they normally are:
Ph: 7.5, NO2: 0, NO3: 10, NH3: 0

I think you are right to keep the water pristine but it could be a simple blemish that isn't anything to worry about. It is hard to tell from the pictures though but I would carry on with the treatment and naturally keep an eye on it.

I'm sure some of the other guys are better qualified to answer this though so wait and see what they come up with

I've seen similar patches on my mbunas. Two things pop into my mind, infection and scarring. Has the puffer had a white spot for very long, is he alone in the tank, is the spot growing.
Either scenario, I would treat with Melafix. If nothing else it will fight infection while it heals. If the spot has just appeared I would treat for a longer amount of time than if it is scarring.

My turgidus gets spots like that ocassionally, but his tank has a ton of driftwood and he's always wiggling through tight spots. I think its just small injuries healing over because they are always gone within a day or so.

Looks live he had aggrevated an old injury, the day after, it had gone down and today it looks back to normal.

Cool news I think ti was Rocker in a nother post that likened those marks to the white marks we get in our nails. With time it should grow out I think he said

Yeah mine has the white marks in his fins as well, this was a little different, the entire length of the ray in the fin had tuned white. My pic doesnt really show that put its difficult when he's flying around. It's sorted now anyway.
